Late Goal Win  For Glenville

U21 Football C'Ship

Castlelyons  0-07  Glanville  2-04

The second round of the U21 football championship took place at the weekend when we took on Glenville. Pitch conditions were very poor and with a strong wind blowing down the pitch it made for very difficult playing conditions for both sides. Castlelyons playing with the aid of the strong wind in the first half took a while to settle and shot some poor wides before Glenville got the first score of the match. R Bransfield got Castlelyons first score  a point after 10 mins to level the match but Glenville then broke away and scored a goal to have them leading by a goal after 15 mins.Castlelyons got more into the game and scored the next 3 points through A Fenton who got injured while scoring his last point and had to leave the field. Glenville scored 2 fast points with R Bransfield replying with a point for Castlelyons to leave Glenville leading at half time by 1 point. Against the wind in the second half Castlelyons played some great football with everyone working to a standstill to limit Glenville to just 1 point and with points of our own from R Bransfield and B O Donovan the teams were level with time almost up. Glenville got one last chance to win the match when they were awarded a free which hit the upright and came back to a inrushing Glenville forward who finished the ball to the net. Final whistle sounded shortly after with Glenville winning by 2-04 to 0-07. This was a great performance by a Castlelyons team who were missing a lot of players through injuries and with very little football training done.

PI Hurling League

Castlelyons  2-16  Tracton  1-21

Castlelyons played Tracton in a PI hurling league match on Sunday morning last in Tracton. On a bright dry morning and with pitch conditions excellent this made for a fast, competitive match. C McGann opened Castlelyons scoring with a point from a free in the 2nd minute and M Spillane added another to lead by 2 points to 1 after 5 mins.P Mahon and S Moroney, following good work from D Sexton, increased our lead with 2 more points and the whole team were settling down and playing well together. Tracton had leveled the match by the 15th minute but when P Mahon sent a great ball into B Fitzgerald he made no mistake with a well taken goal. C McGann and M Spillane with 5 frees between them finished out our scoring to leave Castlelyons leading at half time 1-10 to 0-10. E Maye got our first score of the second half and when M Spillane goaled after 10 mins we were 6 points ahead and playing well. Tracton ,with the wind in this half, were coming more into the match and when they goaled with 15 mins left they began to dominate. Castlelyons replied with points from M Spillane, P Mahon and R Bransfield but Tracton got on a roll and ended up winning by 2 points. A disappointing result after some great passages of play and fantastic effort from everyone that played. Best wishes to R Feeney who went off the field with a nasty looking injury and hope you will be back playing soon.

Castlelyons GAA Club intend to set up a weekly text service where important club information such as  Lotto results ,weekly fixtures and any other necessary information can be sent to all members ,players and club supporters. If you would like to receive this text please give your name and number to any officer of the adult, juvenile or camogie clubs and your name will be added to the list. In association with this the club website is being revamped at present .Our current website is in existence over 10 years and  at this stage it appears dated and not very user friendly. K McGann undertook the task of producing a new website and in association with Alan Waters they have come up with a new modern site from which the user can easily gain any information that they require. It is hoped that the website will go live in the next few weeks.

Gum Shields

Since Jan 1st 2014 it is now a rule of GAA that all footballers ,irrespective of age or grade, must wear a gum shield while training or playing a match. This is a reminder to all players, with football training and matches taking place at present, that without a gum shield a player wont be allowed train or play.

First Aid

The care and welfare of players , while either training or playing a match, is of utmost importance to Castlelyons GAA club. With that in mind an appeal is being issued to anyone with first aid training who would be interested in helping out the club for the coming season. The hope is that a panel of first aiders can be set up with the task rotated between all that panel. Anyone who would be interested in helping out please give their name to any officer of the club.
