PIH League Commences

Castlelyons  0-12  Bandon  0-19

Castlelyons took on Bandon in their first PIH League match of the season on Sunday last. This match was originally scheduled to be played in Bandon but with their pitch unplayable due to heavy overnight rain, the match was played in Castlelyons on a pitch that was in very good condition considering all the inclement weather we have had.Bandon started very brightly and took the lead with a point in the first minute and followed this with 2 more points before Castlelyons had their first point from a free by R Feeney.Bandon threatened to overrun Castlelyons in the first quarter of the match and led by 0-06 to 0-01 after 15 mins.Castlelyons full and half back lines started to get to grips with their opponents and with better ball going into the forwards Castlelyons cut the deficit with points from E Maye,A O Sullivan, A Spillane and R Feeney to leave the score at half time Castlelyons 0-07 Bandon 0-08. The second half was a carbon copy of the first with Bandon again starting very brightly and scored the first 4 points of the half to lead by 5 points.Castlelyons kept fighting away and some good defending resulted in points from L Sexton, C Barry ,E Maye, R Bransfield and C McGann but Bandon maintained their lead and ran out winners on a score of Castlelyons 0-12 Bandon 0-19. This was a very good contest with great commitment shown by all that played and it was obvious that Bandon have a lot of early season work done whereas Castlelyons are still in heavy physical training with very little hurling done at present. Our next league match is on next Sunday when we take on Ballyhea in Castlelyons.

Minor Football

Castlelyons minor football team were down to play 2 matches over the weekend. First up were Carrignavar but this match was called off due to illness in the Carrignavar squad and they were unable to field a team. The match against St Catherines did go ahead but unfortainatly with 10 mins to go our floodlights failed and the match was called off. Castlelyons had been playing very well in this match ,with a very young team, and were leading at the time on a score of 2-07 to 0-03.This now means that the first 4 matches of the season have not been played and this could result in a fixture pileup later on in the year.
