Russell Rovers 2-9 Glenville 0-7

We played our first competitive game of the year last Sunday when our footballers travelled to Fouhy Park to take on Glenville in Division 2 of the Junior Football League. Despite the forecast, the weather held up well, apart from a strong cross-field wind, though the same can not be said for the playing surface which at best can only be described as being in a very poor state, particularly the goalmouths. Nevertheless, our lads put their shoulders to the wheel and got stuck in from the throw-in (no pun intended!). Points by Derek Crowley, Jack McGrath (free) and Kieran Walsh had us level with the home side after 20 minutes of play. In the 25th minute Kevin Ivers followed in a delivery to punch the ball to the net and three minutes later Jack McGrath pointed another difficult free to give us a 4 points cushion at the break, 1-4 to 0-3.

The outcome of this contest was decided in the opening ten minutes of the second half when first, Derek Crowley pointed within seconds of the re-start, followed by another from Michael Furlong. In the 9th minute our lead was extended to 9 points when a shot from Derek Crowley slithered across the goalmouth mud and just crept over the line, with Kevin Ivers on hand to make doubly sure of it. Glenville, to their credit, didn’t give up and piled on the pressure which yielded 3 points over the next 10 mins before Eoin McGrath ended our barren spell with a good point with Kieran Walsh providing the pass. Ronan Maguire made a welcome return to the playing field following a lengthy absence and marked his return with an excellent point from an acute angle in the 24th minute. Tadgh Crowley completed our scoring with a point in the 27th minute, with Glenville adding another point to their tally in injury time.

This win was the result of a great team effort with players constantly supporting the man in possession. In addition to those mentioned above, David Whelehan, Paul Lane and John Paul Ivers were also prominent while Shane Casey never looked like conceding a goal.

Team: Shane Casey; Aidan Beausang, David Whelehan, Brian Crowley; Eoin McGrath, Paul Lane, Ricky Walsh; John Paul Ivers, Tadgh Crowley Kieran Walsh, Jack McGrath Brian Whelehan; Kevin Ivers, Derek Crowley, Michael Furlong. Subs: Ronan Maguire, Seamus Kearney (both used) and Chris Scanlon.
