Junior Football Challenge

Lisgoold 2-7 (13) Kinsale 3-12 (21)

At Kinsale 2nd February 2014

It a very blustery Kinsale ground last Sunday morning. We saw the managerial bow of Owen Hegarty. This was always going to be an uphill struggle as we were playing against intermediate opposition. However with great team-spirit, discipline and flair our lads took to the task at hand. It was more of an experimental outfit as new (and old) blood were tested out. The first half was a compelling affair as the wind dominated the half (and being honest destroyed the game), which Kinsale elected to go with after winning the toss. One must admire the steel and resilience shown as our lads battled head to head with Kinsale, Moss O'Connell, Alan Conroy, Eoin O'Sullivan, Paul Stack & John Cashman were playing well for the blue and gold. The fact the hosts were kept to 0-8 in the first half coupled with our 1-2 (goal scored by John Cashman) meant we were in a good position at the short whistle. However instead of trying to claim a famous scalp the management staff opted to breed in the 'new kids on the block' and it’s here we saw Darragh Fleming, Caoimhín O'Se, Kieran O'Shea, and Luke Morrissey, were some of the youngsters that made their debut. It was impressive to see such young talent coming through and bodes well when the club is able to produce this many youngsters. Although Kinsale were to eventually prevail in this game with two late goals in the last eight minutes, the management can be happy with a very satisfactory afternoon workout. Manager Owen Hegarty was pleased with the outcome, "It was the first game of the year, we had 32 togged out and everyone got a run. I am pleased with today's performance allowing that there is room for improvement; it is only the first game of the year. It was great to see the youngsters coming through to the junior panel which can only point to a bright future for the club".
