Bride Rovers GAA Notes

Seniors and Juniors Prepare

The weekend of June 27th/28th will be a hectic one for the club with both our Junior and Senior hurling teams in championship action. First into the fray will be the Junior ‘A’ hurling team who take on Lisgoold in Castlelyons on Saturday evening June 27th. The following afternoon our Senior hurling team will take on Blackrock in Pairc Uí Chaoimh at 3pm. Our junior hurlers won promotion from Division 2 of the East Cork Junior Hurling League this season but the team is competing well and playing the games which is the important thing. Lisgoold will prove very tough opponents in the championship. They won the East Cork and County Junior ‘B’ hurling championship last year and the county Under 16 Championship in 2007. In both hurling and football they are adjusting well to competing at ‘A’ grade level – already their Junior ‘A’ football team is in the semi final of the Championship. Last week we had two games in the Junior Hurling League. We were away in both games to Carrignavar and to Russell Rovers. The East Cork Junior Hurling Champions Carrignavar were in top scoring form and defeated us by a margin of 16 points 1-20 to 1-4. On last Saturday night then we were on the road again, to Shanagarry to face Russell Rovers. This was a much more competitive game with the home Rovers coming out on top by 2-11 to 1-10.

The teams in these games lined out as follows:

V Carrignavar: B Hazelwood, S O’Brien, B O’Driscoll, J O’Connor, T Kearney, L Forde, P Walsh, J Pratt, G O’Flynn, S Pratt, P O’Driscoll, R Cahill, J Mannix, A O’Keeffe, D Lane. Subs: J Delaney, K O’Keeffe, W O’Leary, N Hogan.

V Russell Rovers: B Hazelwood, G O’Flynn, B O’Driscoll, K Manley, J O’Connor, L Forde, T Kearney, J Pratt, S Kearney, S Pratt, M Hogan, P O’Driscoll, J O’Dowd, R Cahill, P Cotter. Subs: S O’Brien, A Broderick, N Hogan.

Senior Championship

With just over a week to go to the Blackrock game its all systems go for the Senior hurlers. With ‘home’ advantage and a marvellous championship record, the Rockies will be probably installed as favourites for the clash on June 28th. The strength and depth of hurling in the Blackrock Club can be seen in the fact that already their ‘second string’ has accounted for both Kanturk and St Vincents in the Intermediate Hurling Championship. Their form in the Senior Hurling League has been very impressive and the news coming from the Church Road Headquarters is the they mean business. Our victory over Castlelyons was noteworthy on two accounts, first because of the margin of our victory – the biggest we’ve had at Cork Co. Senior Hurling Championship level since going up in 2004. Secondly ‘twas our first win over Castlelyons since 1969, some may say that tradition and ‘bogey’ teams mean little nowadays. Nevertheless there was a great deal of pressure on our lads going into the Ballynoe game. The win furthermore guarantees our senior status for 2010 regardless of how we get on in the remainder of the 2009 campaign. We’ve followed this route last year and came within a point of winning the county. This in itself doesn’t guarantee anything but he team can now train in the knowledge that the haunting fear of relegation is gone. A few years ago we went to Church Road to play Blackrock’s third team in a challenge game – our first team! Yes, times have changed indeed. Our last encounter with Blackrock was in this year’s Senior Hurling League just five weeks ago. That game in Rathcormac ended in a five point victory for the city side. In the recent past of course they also defeated us in the Co. Senior Hurling League Final at Pairc Uí Rinn. That was a heartbreaking defeat as we h ad lead all the way only to be pipped by a point at the very end.
