Junior ‘B’ Football Championship vs Glanmire

Our footballers bowed out of the junior ‘B’ championship last Friday night at a bitterly cold Rostellan. Rovers started the game the better of the two but failed to convert this dominance into scores on the board. A Brian Whelehan point, just past the 10th minute, opened the scoring and this was quickly followed up by another point from Ian Smiddy. A Glanmire point was added before a move, which started at the full back line with the ball moving all the way up to the full forward line, resulted in a penalty for the Rovers, but unfortunately Kevin Tattans tame penalty was easily saved. Another point from Ian Smiddy restored the two point lead, before a brace of points for Glanmire leveled proceedings. As half time loomed Rovers were reduced to 14 men as an off the ball incident resulted in a red card for Colman Quinlan. A point from Brian Whelehan gave Rovers a one point lead at the halftime whistle but this could have been a wider margin if Rovers had been more efficient at taking their scores.

Glanmire came out in the second half and immediately took advantage of the extra man and scored the games first goal, this was followed by a point to give them a 3 point lead. Again Rovers had much of the ball but their execution in the final third left a lot to desire, raking up 12 wides in the entire game. Glanmire added another two points before Rovers managed to get their first and only score of the second half, a free from Jack McGrath. Glanmire added another goal in the final moments to add an extra bit of gloss on the scoreline. But truth be known it was the poor shooting from the Rovers that proved the differences between the sides. Full time score Glanmire 2-6 Rovers 0-5.
