Glenville GAA Club News

11 November, 2013

In horrendous weather conditions all weekend Glenville had two very important fixtures. After an unbeaten year so far the U12 Footballers faced into a County Final against another unbeaten side Mid Cork outfit Canovee in the decider. Glenville after beating Nemo Rangers in the semi final way back in August had a long wait for this one and began rusty enough conceding a goal in the opening 10 seconds. Backed by a strong spine in which a defensive unit worked as a group Glenvilles platform was as sound as a rock with Daire o Leary and his cousin Ciaran as dependable as ever in the back line. Cathal Fitzgerald who keeping up the tradition of his fathers instincts in goal was in great form and formed a solid last line of defence. Glenville after a turbulent start began to play and coming up to the break trailed by 2-3 to 1-2 but 2-1 in the closing moments gave us great hope. The second half was the James o Leary show as the dynamic forward kicked 0-7 all from play in a super display of marksmanship. Along with Sean Desmond who scored 2-2 was another hero in a great display but far from a 2 man show this was as everyone contributed and in true Glenville spirit frantically defended the goal as if their life depended on it in the closing minutes. Glenville winners in the end 3-10 to 3-8 in one of the best juvenile finals this year and also well done to Noel and Mossie on manufacturing a great team performance which will be of great boast to the club going forward. Ciaran o Leary the Glenville captain accepted the cup with great applause from his fellow teammates.

On Sunday in what must be described as more a kin to a mud bath Aghada and Glenville braved the elements in the semi final of the Junior C Football Championship in Lisgoold. Glenville opened well and JJ kearney and John O Connell pointed early. Soon after Aghada opened Niall Griffin kicked a great point to extend the lead. With scores hard to come by Alan Crowley showed great composure to slot a great goal to the net. Glenville lad 1-4 to 0-2 at half time and looking good. The game was wrapped up soon after the second half as three points in three minutes extended the lead. With the conditions deteoriating scores were going to be harder to come but Glenville continued to play with great vigour through the excellence of Denis o Farrell and John o Keeffe in attack. Further scoreds from Aaron Ricken and Joe Culloty put the seal on a great win for Glenvilles third team. Lisgoold wait in the Final in a repeat of last years Final Score Glenville 1-13 Aghada 0-4.
