County JAHC semi-final replay

Castlemartyr 0-15 Kilbrin 0-16

Heartbreak for Castlemartyr in the county semi-final as Kilbrin came out on top by the minimum of margins after a total of 120 minutes of hurling. Having been four points up shortly after half time this is a game Castlemartyr will feel they should have won, but instead it is Kilbrin who now meet Grenagh in the final. Castlemartyr did up their performance from the first day and led by two points at half time, nine points to seven. Barry Lawton back in the side was unerring from frees as well as scoring two from play. Brian Lawton playing a more deeper role was also very involved in the play. Kilbrin did create a couple of goal chances but Eanna McGovern kept them at bay with a couple of smart saves.

Castlemartyr had the first two scores of the second half to stretch their lead to four but Kilbrin then had a spell on dominance to score three without reply and our lead was suddenly down to a single point. Another Barry Lawton point was cancelled out quickly by a Kilbrin free. Substitute Derek Bowens them caught a long clearance and scored a great point to put us two up again but a couple of  Kilbrin frees levelled the game and it was now all to play for with ten minutes left. Substitute Liam Martin then pointed to put us back in front but again Kilbrin levelled with a free. Derek Bowens the set up Barry Lawton for a point from play to put us back in front with four minutes left but unfortunately this proved to be our last score of the day. In the next two attacks by Kilbrin, they managed to score two points from play to be ahead at the final whistle and claim their place in the final.

Overall it was a fine game of hurling with some great scores from both sides. Best for Castlemartyr were Eanna McGovern who hardly put a foot wrong over the two games, Brian Smiddy who was very solid at center back and Barry Lawton who provided the majority of our scores from play and frees.

So our hurling year comes to a close on a disappointing note but still as East Cork champions which is a fantastic achievement. We wish Kilbrin the best of luck in the final and look forward to 2014 where we will look to retain our East Cork title. Well done to all the squad and management for a great year.
