East Cork JAFC Final Replay
Lisgoold 1-7 (10)
Glenbower Rovers 2-9 (15)
At Rathcormac
19th October 2013

It was a disappointing ending to what was a roller coaster season as our footballers ran up short against Glenbower Rovers last Saturday week in a splendid Rathcormac venue. It was tense, tight & tantalizingly close for our lads as they nearly closed the deal but ultimately failed to turn up for the second half after an excellent first thirty minutes. After a long season, it came down to the last 60 minutes to decide the champions for 2013. In truth, it was a much better game than the low-scoring contest the previous day. At the start both defenses were on top, but Joe Deane with Seamus Harnedy were the first to raise the white flag as nerves disappeared for both sides. John Cashman replied quickly before a dubious penalty was awarded to the men in green in the 11th minute. This was missed, and one could be forgiven for thinking that this was our day. Lisgoold took over for the rest of the half playing a good pressure game and producing some wonderful scores, especially from Conor Walsh and Cathal Cashman.  We got the first breakthrough when a wonderful long ball by John Cronin (who was Lisgoold’s best player for the hour) found brother Ciarán who fisted the ball in the net. Another few points from Cashman and we went in with the breeze at our backs for the second half 1-5 to 0-3 ahead.

The second half will be seen as one of missed opportunities for us; Rovers evaporated our lead within eight minutes as Seamus Harnedy was goalscorer as well as point provider to tie the game. Both teams seemed to be subdued as both sides then faltered as a niggliy game developed, as tensions threatened to boil over. Points were traded, ours a superb effort by John Cronin when the turning point came with ten minutes to go, with Rovers up 1-7 to1-6 ahead. A long ball was pumped into square which seem to be going over, however the strong gale held it up, and made it awkward for both defence and attack but unfortunately it was not dealt with ideally and the ball was forced home. We had plenty of chances of our own afterwards but with now a four point gap it was looking unlikely to be our day. We tired in vain to get back into it but the game peered out to its conclusion; Glenbower rovers won three in a row.

In truth, it was a tough & nerve wrecking spectacle to go through as we had faltered at the final hurdle again. It has been a tough a year and this defeat will be hard to take, for our lads the belief is there to win this championship, it’s a case of to dust themselves down and go again next year. To close off on the words of American Football Legend Vince Lombardi “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you can get back up.”

East Cork JCFC First Round
Lisgoold 2-13 (19)
Aghada 2-7 (13)
At Rostellan
25th October 2013

The second string provided a moral boosting win last Friday night, it a splendid Rostellan pitch. Playing well controlled play with Kieran Barry, Brian O’Leary, Kevin O’Keeffe and Moss Mulcahy in defence. Whilst Dave Barry, Bill Whelan, Noel O’Riordan & Jamie Woods  buzzing in attack Lisgoold played well for the first half, limiting Aghada to long range shots, and forced misses, while we were very economical with our attacks. Noel capped off a superb half for us with a spectacular lob to raise the green flag. We went for the half-time jaffa 1-7 to 0-3 ahead.

In traditional, expected fashion Aghada came roaring back and were quick to get a goal of their own as points were traded. A second goal was to follow for Aghada as the score were amazingly level with 42 minutes played 1-10 to 2-7. It was here though that Lisgoold kicked on, some great play by subs Paul Stack and Killian Kingston allowed Sub Alan Conroy to hit a belter of a goal which he quickly followed with a point. This created a gap that Aghada couldn’t close. The game played to its enviable conclusion as we won by six. It was a good performance but there is scope for a lot of improvement as mistakes were aplenty throughout the hour. They have two points on the board and will have to play a waiting game for the next encounter.

County Final

Congratulations to our Under 16’s on completing the treble in the county league hurling final vs. Carbery rangers. After starting the second half 2-7 to 0-3 down, they roared back to win 4-10 to 2-10. Well done lads you have done the parish proud.
