Div 4 Football League final vs Aghada

Our junior footballers claimed their first piece of silverware in two years last Sunday morning in a fine October morning in Shanagarry. Playing with the aid of the wind in the first half Rovers notched up a two point lead within the first 10 minutes before Aghada got on the scoreboard. Rovers we on dominating the play in the first half but their accuracy in front of the posts left them cursing their shooting boots. Aghada started to find their feet but then a good Derek Crowley goal kicked the Rovers  into gear and they added another three points. Aghada added three more points before the halftime whistle. The halftime score was Rovers 1-5 Aghada 0-4.

Aghada started the second half better and kicked over a couple of scores to narrow the margin but a good run down the sideline by JP Ivers resulted in a drilled ball across the goalmouth and an exquisite touch by Brian Whelehan diverted the ball into the Aghada goalmouth, points by Kieran Walsh and Ian Smiddy extended the lead. But Aghada weren’t finished and kept the scoreboard ticking over with some good free taking. The final nail in the Aghada coffin came when Daniel O’Brien made a solo run from the 45 and blasted the ball past the Aghada keeper in the final minutes of the match. The final whistle sounded and the celebrations began for the Rovers on a scoreline of 3-8 to 0-10. It was a much improved performance on the Cloyne game and hopefully this will be a good boost for the Junior B championship.
