East Cork Junior A Hurling Final: Sat 19, Oct 13:

Castlemartyr 2-16 Sarsfields 2-10

Castlemartyr captured their 3rd East Cork Junior A Hurling title in five years after overcoming the challenge of Sarsfields in Rathcormack on Saturday
. This was a game that Castlemartyr controlled for the majority. Sars did have a purple patch mid way through the second half but Castlemartyr showed character to fend off the challenge and close out the match.

Sarsfields played with the wind in the first half but it was Castlemartyr who dominated the half with very poor shooting from Sars not helping their cause. Sars opened the scoring with a free but Castlemartyr’s first score was very significant. Brian Lawton set off on a run through the hearth of the Sars defence and laid the ball off to Liam Martin. Liam’s shot was saved by the Sars goal keeper but Evan O’Keeffe was their waiting to sweep the ball to the net in true poacher fashion. This score settled Castlemartyr and with the backs on top at one end the forwards kept the score board ticking over at the other end Castlemartyr were playing well. Jimmy Smiddy converted five frees and points from play from Evan O’Keeffe and Eddie Clifford meant we went in at the break leading 1-7 to 0-03.

Castlemartyr kept their momentum going after the break, scoring the first two points of the second half through Evan O’Keeffe and Seanie Hennessey. Sars hit back with a point from play but a great Eddie Clifford point after catching a puck out kept us in the driving seat. Barra O’Tuama then raised a white flag before two Sars points kept their hopes alive. Peter Horgan then pointed before Sars enjoyed their best spell of the match scoring a goal and two points without reply to reduce the gap to four points. With the Castlemartyr crowd getting anxious the players rallied and showed character. Jimmy Smiddy knocked over a free and Barra O’Tuama got his second point of the day. Then came the score of the game. Brian Lawton again turned provider when he hand passed to Evan O’Keeffe on the 21 yard line. With one movement Evan turned and sent a rocked of a shot into the top corner of the net that the Sars keeper hardly saw. With five minutes left we knew we had probably done enough. Sars did score a goal but it was not enough to deny Castlemartyr. Eddie Clifford brought his tally to three points from play and the last score of the game came from the long serving Steve Collins to put the seal on a six point victory.

This was a hugely satisfying win for Cha O’Neill and his selectors Bernard Lawton and Christy Connery. The backs hardly put a foot wrong all day with Brian O’Tuama and Adrian Bowens standing out. Our midfield paring of Barra O’Tuama and Peter Horgan worked up and down the field as well as contributing three points between them. Upfront, the loss of Barry Lawton was a big talking point but credit must go to every one of the 6 forwards who all contributed to the victory. Brian Lawton was instrumental in both goals, Eddie Cliffored scored three points form play while man of the match Evan O’Keefe finished with a personal tally of 2-2.

So now the focus switches to the county championship where Kilbrin await in the semi final. They will no doubt provide a big challenge having beaten a fancied Newtownshandrum team in the quarter final but if our lads play to their potential there is no reason why we can’t reach the county final.
