East Cork JAFC Final AET
Lisgoold 1-6 (9)
Killeagh 1-6 (9)
At Carrigtwohill
5th October 2013

It was tense, tight & tantalizingly close for our lads as they nearly closed the deal in last Saturdays east cork final. After a long season, it came down to the last 60 minutes (which turned out to be eighty minutes) to decide the champions for 2013. In truth it was a low-scoring contest for football as both defenses were on top, and nerves crept into both sides for the entire game. It took 13 minutes for the first score which came from the both of John Cashman; he added another along with a super score from Pa Mahony to make it 0-3 to 0-0. Thanks to wonderful defending by Charlie McCarthy, Jamie Hurley, Eoin O’Sullivan & Cathal Cashman it wasn’t until the 21st minute that Killeagh finally opened their tally. John hit over another free, but in the last five minutes of the half we saw Killeagh score 1-1, with the goal coming from an error from our defence. There was a slight scuffle afterwards, which was dealt calmly and efficiently by referee Pa O’Driscoll. Killeagh added another point afterwards to make the half time score 1-2 to 0-4.

The second half was one of missed opportunities for both sides; we had plenty of chances of our own but just couldn’t convert into scores. Killeagh opened early in the 31st minute; incredibly it was to be their last score for the next 37 minutes. After Killeagh had a man sent off, it was Lisgoold’s match for the taking, however we just couldn’t convert those chances that were created to points. Pa Mahony eventually got on one on target in the 51st minute, before a nerveless John Cashman hit the equalizer in injury time. The game peered out to its conclusion; it was extra time - 1-3 to 0-6

Killeagh (who were allowed to return to 15 players) got the first white flag over in the first few minutes and Lisgoold were unable to get back as tigerish defending  from Killeagh and fatigue in our players saw some tired passes being made. In the 73rd minute the break through seemed to have been made. A super break by Cathal Cashman, who laid the ball to John, who managed to conjure the green flag with seven minutes to go. Cramp and tiredness was creeping to both camps as misplaced passes and chances were aplenty. Killeagh got it down to the minimum entering injury time. They had two glorious opportunities to draw level but they didn’t take them however there was still time, and in the fourth minute of injury time Killeagh leveled with a free.

In truth, it was a tough & nerve wrecking spectacle to go through and both sides should consider themselves lucky to have a second chance. For our lads the belief is there to win this championship, it just needs one final push and I urge our fantastic supporters who came in their droves, to come once more and urge our lads over the line when the replay comes. Ye can do it Lads, just one small step.
