Junior ‘B’ Football championship Russell Rovers 0-8 Cloyne 0-7

Our junior footballers lined up for the first round of the east Cork championship against our parish rivals Cloyne. Played on a lovely autumnal afternoon, on a less than impressive pitch, it was rovers who kicked the first score of the game from a J.P Ivers run. Two more points were added, from Kieran Walsh and Brian Whelehan, before Cloyne got on the scoreboard. The rovers forwards were creating a number of chances but they were unable to find the clinical touch and this lead to an increasing amount of wides, 10 in total for the first half. Another JP Ivers point was cancelled out by another Cloyne score which left the score at the half time whistle at rovers 4 points cloyne 2 points.

The start of the second half followed the same pattern as the first half with rovers adding to their wide total. Points from Brian Whelehan and Ian Smiddy gave rovers a four point cushion with 20 minutes to go. Cloyne were reduced to 14 men after a straight red card but instead of rovers taking the initiative Cloyne rallied and gained control of the closing stages of the game. They managed to close the game to two points before another point from Kieran Walsh kept the 3 point lead, but Cloyne never folded and reduced the score to a point before J.P Ivers added his third and rovers final score of the game. With 5 minutes left in the game Cloyne got back to within a point but they were unable to find the equalising score and rovers clung on for a one point win. The full time score was rovers 0-8 Cloyne 0-7. With the next round a few weeks away it gives the team lots of time to correct the mistakes and hopefully improve on this performance.
