JAFC East Cork Football Semi-Final

Lisgoold 1-10 (13)
Erins Own 1-5 (8)
At Killeagh
10th September 2013

It was a dour, slow, patient but effective performance from our footballer’s as they advanced to our second final in three years. Having played so well all year, few would have expected this type of performance but with Erins Own’s blanket type defence, our management had little option but to adapt to a slightly different style than usual to win this game. We had a whirlwind start to the game 0-3 to 0-0 up after 10 minutes, the pick of those was a wonderful team score finished by Cathal Cashman. Erins Own began to fight back but we were holding out with some great defensive display by the two Eoins, Johnsey and Jamie Hurley. The Caherlag boys pegged us back to 0-3 to 0-2 before John Cashman slotted a free to extend our lead by two points, this was cut to one mintues later and then the breakthrough came coming into injury time. A long ball by johnsey, which was fed into brother Ciarán, who punched into the net for the first green flag of the match. This was frustaringly cancelled out seconds later by a goal by Erins Own. However we trooped off at half-time 1-4 to 1-3 ahead.

The second half saw a much better, solid and respectful performance in which Erins Own did their best to cut into the lead but some excellent resilience and quick movement allowed Lisgoold to sail ahead. With the help of some points from Barry, Mossy, and a exquisite one from Ciarán meant Lisgoold were on the way to the East Cork final once again. With Charlie, Jamie, Patrick, Conor & John McCarthy on song the result peeped out to its conclusion as Erins Own couldn’t close the gap and fell at the semi-final stage again. The only sour point of the game was were our captain Noel was sent off for a second yellow offence, this was equaled in injury time when Erins Own were reduced to fourteen as well. So Lisgoold are in the final once more, in a repeat of the 2011 final with Killeagh. One hopes that we can make that small step to land that east cork title.

JCHC Quarter-final

Lisgoold 0-14 (14)
Russell Rovers 2-12 (18)
At Ballinacurra
14th September 2013

The second team could count themselves as extremely unlucky not to come out on top in this championship clash last Saturday. It was a tit for tat battle for the first half in a splendid Ballinacurra pitch. Rovers got the edge as they opened the scoring with some lovely scores. We were quick to reply with some great scores by Alan, Finbarr and a few long range frees from Charles. There were a few hairy moments in front of goal but our full back line of John, Kieran & Moss coupled with the evergreen Kevin Shea between the sticks were holding well. In fact we threatened a goal chance ourselves in the first half but couldn’t take it. With some great teamwork, good shooting and great team fighting spirit we clawed ourselves back twice from four points down to draw even. At half time it was 0-9 apiece.

The second half we saw the breakthrough only a few minutes into half were the rovers managed to make the break through in the space of a few minutes they managed to raise the green flag twice  from long range frees and that seemed to be game over. However one must admire the fightback that our lads produced, they fought every step of the way and when Kevin O’Shea emerged from the goals to the full forward position a few goal chances were created, but we just couldn’t convert them. Without the goals, Russell rovers could keep us at bay, and hold out for a deserved win, which they only wrapped up in injury time with two late points. It’s the end of the road for the second team hurlers; they will now have to wait a while for the Junior C Football Championship which is due to be played in late October/November of this year.
