Glenville GAA Club News

11 September, 2013

Of course activities in Croke Park took centre stage last weekend with the All Ireland Final but it didnt demise the action on a domestic front with the highlight being the Premier Intermediate hurlers qualifing for the penultimate stage of the PIHC with a hard earned win over a dogged Kilbrittain side in Pairc Ui Rinn last Saturday afternoon. The Minor and U12 footballers progress to the Finals with good wins over the week.

Minor football championship

The Minor Footballers qualified for the Final of the B championship with a late rally getting over the line against Aghinagh on Wednesday night last in Coachford. Glenville had a very easy win over Carrignavar the previous day and were all at sea early on as Aghinagh tore into the game early on conguiring up a good lead 0-5 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes. Our defence was all over the place but settled down and began to get a grip and hold onto posession better. Scores began to develop mainly through frees as Colm Fenton kicked a point and Josh Cooke kicked three to leave us in a good position but just on half time an Aghinagh goal rocked us and we trailed 1-5 to 0-6 at the break. A differant Glenville side appeared in the second half and we got on top in all areas. Scores began to go over as Adam Murphy Josh and PJ Dennehy found the range. The game was still not done but a Josh Cooke goal with 5 mins to go sealed a win that wasnt looking likely earlier on. A huge improvement is needed if we are to trouble Donoughmore in the Final who put up a huge score in the other semi final beating St Vincents 4-24 to 0-1. This Final is on this weekend with time to be decided . Final Score Glenville 1-12 Aghinagh 1-5

Junior Football

The Junior C team had two league games last week to finish off the league programme. On Tuesday night we played Lisgoold and had a good win in Fouhy Park winning 2-12 to 1-5 Paddy o Leary and Mossie Keane getting the goals . Then on Monday night Killeagh/Itas made the long trip up to play us in the last league game. This was a lively game with a very fast Killeagh side looked like they were going to over run us . Down 0-7 to 0-1 we turned the game with an exhibition of great football and went in level at half time 0-8 each. We continued where we left off in the second half and everything we kicked seemed to fly over. Glenville ended up winning 0-15 to 0-9  In the end a great few days for the Junior Cs .John o Keeffe Paud o Neill and JJ Kearney with around 100 years of football experience behind them were leading lights from the County winning team of 1995 still doing the business here. With JJ and Sparky kicking points for fun showing the young guns like Cathal Whelen Jimmy leary and co how its done !!!! Championship this year is a round robin with Glenville Aghada Lisgoold and Ballinacurra doing battle in this group of death !!

The Junior A team were due to play Midleton and Castlemartyr in the last two league games and we recieved a walkover from both as both were unable to field. Really it makes a mockery of the competition as with league deadline completed on the last day of August some clubs only managing to play one or two games all year.

Juvenile affairs

What an thrilling spectacle we saw in Glenville on Thursday night as Glenville and Nemo Rangers played out a super game in the semifinal of the U12 championship. Two well coached sides gave the large crowd something to cheer about . Glenville built up a serious lead at half time only to be whitled down by a onslaught from Nemo who at one stage trailed by 7-3 to 2-4 . Ina frantic last few minutes with Nemo parked in the Glenville defence Glenville super young heros didnt fold and blocked and frustrated Nemo with some super defending. In the end Glenville held out for a great win Glenville 8-10 (34) Nemo Rangers 5-13 (28) A great achievement as this was Nemos strongest outfit. Glenville now in the Final which will be played in the next week or two.
On Friday night we had a busy schedule with both U15 and U13 league sides playing away. The U15 side played away to Ballincollig and this was a very hard tough game with Glenville edging it 2-12 to 4-3 with a late goal. The U13 team were away to Cill naMartra and again we continued on the winning ways with a 8-10 to 5-11 win.
