BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.

Midleton up next in SHC.

The Draw for the next round of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship was made at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on last Friday morning. The previous night as Bruce Springstein strutted his stuff in the Park the Barrs and Douglas battled it out in Cloughduv in the last Round Two game in the Co. SHC which made the draw a bit less complicated.

When the Draw took place we were in the bottom half and have been paired against Midleton. The Bookmakers have Sars as favourites and the Magpies second favourites to win the County this year, but the bookies don’t always get it right. With three Cork Senior Hurlers and six of the under 21 panel Midleton will fancy their chances of going all the way this year. The fact that we have two players with very serious injuries from the Ballinhassig game makes our task all the more difficult. Nevertheless since our elevation to Senior ranks we have had some great championship games against our Imokilly neighbours in Ballynoe and Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Our most recent meeting was in this years REDFM SHL when we lost on  2-  13 to   2 -1 scoreline. The date for this game will become clearer after Thurles on Sunday next. If Cork win and are in an All Ireland semi final anything can happen, the SHC game could be played on the August bank Holiday weekend but that would depend on the attitude of the Cork Hurling Selectors. If Cork lose and are gone from the Championship the August weekend would seem fairly definite. The winners of our pairing meet Carrig or Bishopstown in the next round.

We wish Cork all the best against Kilkenny in Thurles on Sunday next. The Cats are back purring well again having used a few of their nine lives against Tipp and Waterford but Cork never  fear Kilkenny and the Rebels are well capable of qualifying for the semi final. Best of luck also to Cork footballers who travel to GAA HQ in Croke Park to take on Galway at 5 o clock on Saturday in the All Ireland qualifiers.

RED FM Senior Hurling League.

On Sunday night the Senior Hurlers travelled to Danno Kennedy Park in Killeagh to take on the local side. A fairly even start was quickly changed when Jerome O Driscoll scored a brace of goals in a six minute period. These two major score helped us to a 2 7 to 0  6 half time lead. We added a nice tally of ten points in the second half to which the home side replied with a total of 2  4. The final score was Bride Rovers 2  17 Killeagh 2  14. It was a good workout giving us just our third League win. On this coming Friday night July 26th we have our next SHL game with a home tie against Bishopstown at 7.30 pm in Pairc na Bride.

Our remaining SHL games are;

V Newtownshandrum, home.

V Courceys, away.

V Sars, away.

V St. Finbarrs, away,

V Erins Own, home.

MINOR FOOTBALLERS BOW OUT.

After an unbeaten run in the County Minor Football league we faced into the Championship with great hope. Last Thursday however at Whitechurch our Championship aspirations were ended when we met Brian Dillons. A final scoreline of 4 13 to  4  7 just about summed up the tie. We simply had no answer to the city side in the opening period and the took advantage to build up a substantial lead. We fought back well in the second half but were never able to get within striking distance.

TEAM: James Barry, Tadhg O Sullivan, Ryan Prendergast, Jamie Buckley, Shane Walsh, Sean Cotter, William Finnegan, Darren Moore, Cian O Connor, DJ Cahill, Colm Power, Colm Howard,; S.O Connor.

Our immediate attention now turns to the upcoming game against Grenagh in the Minor Hurling Championship.

Under 21 Hurling Championship.

On Monday night we travelled to Clonmult memorial Park in Midleton to take on Youghal in first round of the East Cork under 21 Hurling championship. In truth we were chasing the game from early on after a poor start.  Youghal's ability to score goals was a major factor in the game. After the break we did hit three points in a row to reduce the margin to a manageable four points only for the Seasiders to get another goal. WE did score three goals in the second half, two from Owen Murphy and a goal at the end from Damien Buckley which made the final score Youghal 5  8 Bride Rovers  3  12. To score three goals and twelve point is impressive but we were never really able to get on top in the match.

TEAM; F. Hogan, T. O Sullivan, B. Collins, J. Buckley, D. Quinn, F. Collins, S. O Leary, J. Pratt, C. O Connor, o. Murphy, J. Mannix, W. Finnegan, M. Dooley, G. Healy, D. Buckley. SUBS; S.Cotter  & L. O Leary.
