Under 21 B Hurling Championship 1st Round

Castlegoold 2-13 (19)
Aghada 1-8 (11)
At Shanagarry
20th July 2013

It was a good day for our under 21’s as they booked a quarter final date with Cobh in a few weeks time. We had a great start last Saturday night as we soared to early lead, thanks to John Cashman & Barry Lawton. Aghada quickly responded through the excellent Will Leahy but Castlegoold raised the first green flag of the night as Killian Kingston banged one into the onion bag from close range. Aghada responded strongly and tagged a few more points and with a vibrant half forward line, with the likes of ray savage about, they always looked dangerous. However with Captain John McCarthy Leading by example, aided by Cathal Cashman, Colin something and a Castlemartyr player we were holding well. Aghada were lucky not to be down to fourteen with an off the ball incident in which the referee deemed to be yellow, which we had to accept and move on. When Aghada’s Will Leahy broke through to respond for Aghada with a green flag of their own it was 1-7 to 1-3. The turning point came on the 26th minute as a long range free was sent in and delightfully flicked by Cian Scannell gave us a healthy lead. Points and hits were traded, as we then trooped off for the half-time jaffa. Bainisteoir Ciarán Cronin and his backroom team had work to do as we had eight first half wides, as we went in at half-time 2-8 to 1-4 up.

At the resumption, Castlegoold started to pull away, thanks to some great work by Mark Lawton, Jamie Stack, Andrew O’Donovan and John McCarthy which allowed the platform for the likes of John Cashman and Barry Lawton to produce the goods. The rest of the second half was really a dour affair as wides were aplenty and scores a rarity. However, we battled away to the final whistle and ended on the right side of an eight point margin. Happy with the knowledge that it was mission completed we headed off with a Quarter-final date against Cobh. While a lot of positives can be taken from this, there is scope for improvement and one does think that these lads will get better game by game but we just have to wait and see. It’s onwards and upwards for our boys, keep it going.

Junior Hurling League Division 4

Lisgoold 2-11 (17)
Killeagh 1-17 (20)
At Lisgoold
21st July 2013

Last Sunday morning, in a very hard and dry Páirc Liosgcúl, in very humid conditions the men in green were to avail by three points in what was to be fair, honest and lively encounter.  Killeagh started well with a few points of their own, we responded well with an energetic Peter Leahy, Charles Smart and Denis O’Brien chipping in. Our full back line of Moss, Kieran and John were holding their own and battled away with the superb Charles Smart who was assisted by Jamie Hurley and Finbarr Brosnan. However, Killeagh raised their only green flag for the match after a long ball managed to slip through into the net after 16 minutes. We did recover well as our backs got on top and Charles hit a free into the net to raise the green flag on the 24th minute. Points were traded as we trooped off for the half-time oranges; we went in at the break 1-9 to 1-6 in favour of Killeagh.

At the resumption encouraged by the words of manager Mike Mulcahy, Lisgoold began battling away again; however Killeagh got into the run of things by racking up a few fine scores. The almost got a second goal which would have killed the contest. However what can only be described as acrobatic, dramatic, brave and unbelievable combined defending by our full back line via the help of the post, crossbar and body parts, a second green flag was prevented. Killeagh stunned by these turn of events had to settle for a pointed 65. With this inspired, tigerish defending Lisgoold sprang into life again and with impressive subs Andrew O’Donovan and Kevin O’Keeffe throwing their weight in Lisgoold got themselves back in the game. The league points were up for grabs when an impressive Noel O’Riordan fielded the ball superbly and raised a second green flag. It was game on again, Points were traded again but Killeagh held out for a deserved win. It was a fine, sporting game, which what the GAA is all about and one hopes that our second string can continue with this form for the reminder of the league campaign. Manager Mike Mulcahy had this to say “We played well enough today, but a few errors cost us victory. However with a few more games under our belts, some training and a few more players to return to the squad, I’ve no doubt that we will improve a ton come championship time”.
