Sat 20th July U21 B Hurling Championship Aghada 1-8 Castlegoold 2-13

Aghada lost out in a hard fought championship game in Shanagarry on Saturday evening to a better Castlegoold (Castlemartyr & Lisgoold amalgamation) side.
On a fine summers evening Aghada leveled 1P each after 6mins through W Leahy just after William struck the woodwork when going for goal. In the 7th minute, Aghada failing to clear the ball and with loose marking lead to Castlegoold's first goal, 1-1 to 1P. After 12mins, Castlegoold lead 1-3 to 1P after 2 frees conceded by Aghada. In the 21st min, Aghada were very lucky not to be a man down with the score now 1-5 to 0-1, and then W. Leahy scored a great goal after 26mins. The game defining moment then came in the 30th minute when W Leahy having broken away from his marker had the ball in the Castlegoold net only to be called back for a free which only went over the bar after, 1-6 to 1-3. Almost immediately, from the Castlegoold puck out which ended up over the sideline, Castlegoold scored a goal coming from the resulting sideline. Score at half time Castlegoold 2-6 to 1-3, with Jake O' Donoghue doing very well in defence and Ronan Kennedy getting through a lot of work at midfield and William Leahy getting all the scores up front. John Cashman was causing Aghada's defence a lot of problems getting most of their scores.

About 5 minutes into the second half, with the score at 2-8 to 1-4, Aghada had their best period of the game, getting the next three points, including a great score from Aaron Stafford. But unfortunately the closest Aghada got to within Castlegoold's lead was 4pts, Aghada failing to score in the last 15 minutes of the game. Final score 2-13 to 1-8. David Rice had a very good second half for Aghada, Kane Looney and Shane Dorney also did very well in the fullback line but unfortunately Aghada were not able to give the impressive Willie Leahy much assistance in the scoring side of it, whereas Castlegoold had a better spread of scorers in the 2nd half and much deserved their win.

Team:  Fergal Culligan, Ryan O' Keeffe, Kane Looney, Shane Dorney, Brian Condon, David Rice, Jake O' Donoghue, Ronan Kennedy, Tim Hartnett, Giorgio Corigliano, Ray Savage, Michael Daly, Jack Hayes, William Leahy (1-7), Aaron Stafford (0-1).
Subs – Gerard O' Brien for Corigliano inj (21st min), Josh O' Shea for Michael Daly (27mins), Oisin Lynch for Savage (50mins)

11-9-93 M B F County Aghada 0-9 St Peters 0-9
The outcome sees both Aghada and St. Peters living to fight another day after drawing O-9 each, at Fermoy. Aghada had a great chance of a goal In the opening minute when Mark Lewis beat 5 defenders on a solo run only to hit the ball over the bar, Lewis went on to add another two points in the first half, as well as one from Christy O’Shea. The sides were level at hall-time (four points each) thanks in no small way to goalkeeper Shane Cashman, who saved a superbly-struck penalty. It was “tit-for-tat” in the second half, but entering the closing seven minutes two points from Mark Lewis gave Aghada a second chance. Indeed, Aghada were ‘lucky to hold out as in a St. Peter’s final attack, their corner forward shot wide when it seemed easier to score. Overall, a draw was the fairest result. Aghada team:
Shane Cashman, Joe Morrissey, Gavin Roche, Niall Cotter, Brian Walsh, Cathal Roche, Joseph Day, Stephen O’Donoghue (0-1), Derry O’Brien, Christy O’Shea (0-2), Nigel Berry, Mark Lewis (O-5), .John Paul Crowley (0-1), Dan Foley, Leonard O’Keeffe.

28-11-93 M B F C league semi final Aghada 0-3 Ballinhassig 1-4
Conditions were nothing short of wretched as Aghada minor footballers took on Ballinhassig in the semi final of the county league on Sunday morning. A howling gale, allied to non-stop rain, made a mockery out of a football match in which all these young par¬ticipants gave of their best.
