Senior Hurling Championship Round 4 Draw:
Ears, fingers, eyes and other body parts were at the ready to listen, search or tweet for the Round 4 Senior Hurling Championship Draw which was deferred until Friday morning last so as not to upstage “The Boss” as he played the Park’s half-time entertainment on Thursday evening (ok, so it was a long 3-hour half-time and the senior hurlers of Douglas and the Barrs had actually decamped to rural Cloughduv!). So, when the draw was made we discovered that we were drawn to play against the final divisional team left in the competition, Avondhu. Now if you’re looking for omens, then what about this – the last time Avondhu won the county (their third title) was in 1996, the year that Limerick last won a Munster Hurling Title! Hopefully we can stop this Avondhu team in their tracks, but that will be no easy task against a team who have already beaten Muskerry and Carbery after losing narrowly to UCC in Round 1. This tie is due to be played on the weekend of August 4th / 5th but that may depend on Cork’s result against Kilkenny next Sunday. Up the Rebels, then c’mon the boys in Green! Let’s make it a bad series of results for those wearing Black and Amber!

Division 1 Hurling League Lisgoold Killeagh played in Lisgoold on Sunday July 21st

Teams:
Killeagh senior hurlers played another round of the Cork County Senior Hurling League sponsored by Red FM. against Bride Rovers in Killeagh on Sunday evening last, July 21st 2013. It was our twelfth game in the series and Bride Rovers emerged victorious at the end of a competitive hour’s hurling that saw some quality scores from both sides. Rovers were quicker out of the blocks and had their first goal after 13 minutes and led by 1-4 to 0-1 after the first quarter. Matthew Murphy took over the free-taking at this point after some earlier chances were missed and he was very accurate, scoring 1-4 from frees from here on. Rovers got a second goal after 19 minutes and at that stage led by 2-5 to 0-3. Our lads got some rhythm into their game at this point and went in at half time trailing by 2-7 to 0-6, with Padraig Carroll scoring a fine point from play. A goal by Shane Smiddy at the start of the second half gave our team and supporters hope, but Rovers kept hitting over the points from play and from frees. A point-blank save from Bernard after 39 minutes kept us in the hunt and when Matthew’s long free dropped into the net (perhaps a deflection in the goalmouth) in the 55th minute the margin was down to four. Joe Budds scored two nice points from out the field but Rovers held on and secured the points.
Team: Bernard Rochford, Cian Fogarty, Colin Fogarty, Padraig McGrath, Stephen Murphy (0-1), Kieran Lane (0-1), Pat O’Brien, Andrew Walsh, Matthew Murphy (1-6, 1-4 from frees), Joe Budds (0-3), Daniel Walsh, Padraic Carroll (0-2), Sean Long, Michael Byrne, Shane Smiddy (1-1)

Killeagh are now in eighth place in the league table with ten points from twelve games played and our remaining three games against Sarsfields, Glen Rovers and Carrigtwohill are all away fixtures. We are still in the hunt for a quarter final spot (top-six teams qualify for knockout) but we will a good points tally from our remaining games for this to happen.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile GAA Notes
Minor Football Premier 2 Championship
Killeagh/Itas 3-4 Aghada 4-9
Our minor footballers played Aghada in Round 2 of the Minor Football Championship (scenic route) in sunny Cloyne last Wednesday evening, both teams knowing that a win was vital to remain in this year’s championship. We got off to a blistering start as corner forward Conor Cusack found the Aghada net from a very tight angle. We settled well and Eoghan Keniry converted our first free, followed closely by another Cusack goal. At this stage Aghada settled in and tapped over their first three points, but we held our own and added another Eoghan point plus one from Brendan Delaney to hold our lead. Aghada upped the ante in the closing stages of this first half and dominated the score board, eating into our lead and eventually taking it temporarily, by breaking through our defence and chalking up a 2-3 tally. This lead was short-lived as our full forward Dan Landers struck the Aghada net for our third green flag, leaving the sides all square as the short whistle sounded: Killeagh/Ita’s 3-3 Aghada 2-6.
Both teams exchanged points in the opening seconds of this half, it looked like we were in for a ding dong battle to the finish, but Aghada had other ideas and completely took control, despite our best efforts and with our efforts hampered by the loss of three players to injuries, they secured a further 2-3 without reply to run out worthy winners by 4-9 to 3-4. We wish them every success as they advance to next round.
