Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship 3rd Round

Lisgoold 1-15 (18)
Sarsfields 3-20 (29)
At Rathcormac
13th July 2013

It was the end of the road for our junior as they were outclassed by a classy Sarsfields team. From start to finish this was a great battle as Lisgoold fought to the bitter but ultimately failed to a slicker Sars team. They got off to a lighting start with their forwards in exceptional form and raced into a four point lead. Moss Connell and John Cronin rose to the fore with a couple of points of their own and it was game on. We seemed to be flying especially with the fact we went with them toe tot toe and after a wonderful goal-line clearance by Cathal Cashman and a penalty save by Ciarán one wondered was this going to be our night. It looked very good as John Cronin showed wonderful athleticism to raise the green flag. Sars looked in a lot of trouble and after we traded points (and a few hits) we trooped off 1-8 to 0-9 ahead.

In the second half it turned into a right battle, Sars got the ideal start with a goal and ding dong battled ensured as scores were constantly traded throughout the second half. John McCarthy, Eoin O’Sullivan, Brian O’Sullivan and the ever reliant Moss doing the damage. Sars short passing tactic was causing problems however thanks to Patrick O’Mahony, Conor Walsh and Cathal Cashman we were able to rebuff them time and again. However Sarsfields began to pull away and were doing well to keep in touch with three minutes to go. However the killer blow came when their centre-forward had time to burst in and score a screamer of a goal which ended our brave effort. With the wind out of our sails, It was easy for Sars to tag on another 1-2 in injury time and they were through to the quarter-finals.

It was a disappointing outcome for us; to credit to our men they never once caved in and fought to the end, but the pressure Sars kept us under throughout the second half took its toll. So, our dreams have died to capture Jamsey Kelleher until 2014 we still have a semi-final to play in the Junior A Football and one does hope that our squad can pick themselves up and take this opportunity to get some silverware for 2013.

Subs Used: Jamie Hurley, Eoin O’Sullivan, Jamie Woods.

Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship 3rd Round

Lisgoold 0-16 (16)
Cobh 2-6 (12)
At Caherlag
6th July 2013

It was a dog-fight last Saturday night as O’Leary’s Lions roared into the third round, dumping out Cobh in the process. Lisgoold were quick off the mark and registered the first score via a Moss O’Connell free, John Cronin followed and we were buzzing, however a good few wides were registered and it seemed this great start was not as reflective as it should be on the scoreboard. Cobh bounced back and after 10 mins it was 0-2 each. Cobh’s long ball tactic was causing problems however thanks to Patrick O’Mahony, Conor Walsh and Cathal Cashman (Man of the Match) we were able to rebuff them time and again. It was a real tough battle and scores were at a rarity, Cobh were more than able to match us, even though they were missing three key players from their last outing. Lisgoold were matching them for stride for stride and even though after a few nervy moments Moss pointed the way and even though we had seven first half wides we went in at half-time 0-7 to 0-3 up.

At the resumption Lisgoold started to pull away, thanks to some great work by Brian O’Sullivan and John McCarthy allowed the platform for Moss to produce the goods. Cobh however fought back and they were back in the game when they raised the green flag from a free. It was a real battle from here on, end to end stuff as scores were being traded. John Cashman was in fine form and the hardworking Noel Connery and sub Eoin O’Sullivan were doing their upmost keeping Cobh at bay. At 0-12 to 1-5 one would hope that Lisgoold would pull away but Cobh got a second goal after another defensive lapse with ten minutes to go. It was game on again. Lisgoold responded excellently though with three wonderful points from John Cashman and Moss to re-establish our four point lead. Cobh scored from a free again and we were under pressure again. The momentum could have finally swung in their direction when Derek Barrett leased a 30 yard cracker for the top corner, which was brilliantly saved by our keeper Ciaran. The match then entered five minutes of injury time, before moss finally sealed the game with a last-minute free.

It was good, hard championship encounter. The most positive thing is that we scored sixteen points, but we do have a bit of work to do. However we have time to get it right for Saturday night. Next up is Sarsfields which will be a very difficult task. I urge all our supporters to come out and get behind the Blue and Gold as they go into battle with Sars for a Quarter-final slot against Russell Rovers.

Team: Ciarán Cronin, Noel Connery, Cathal Cashman, Patrick O’Mahony, Jer O’Connell, Conor Walsh, Brendan Flynn, Maurice O’Connell, Barry Ahern (Capt.), John Cashman, John McCarthy, Brian O’Sullivan, Robert Smart, John Cronin, Denis O’Brien.

Subs Used: Jamie Hurley, Eoin O’Sullivan, Kieran Barry (Blood).

Scorers: Moss O’Connell 0-10 (0-8f), John Cashman 0-4, John Cronin, Bryan O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

Referee: Mark Murphy (Bride Rovers)
