Juvenile Notes

Fe13
On Saturday 29th June in Kilbarry, Midleton and Na Piarsaigh Fe 13 Hurlers contested this eagerly awaited replay of the Premier 1 Cork County Championship in front of a large appreciative attendance. In the end, Na Piarsaigh won out on a scoreline of 6-9 to 2-8 and thus brought to an end a tremendous 5 weeks of continuous Championship hurling at this grade. The winning margin did not in any way reflect the closeness of the game and these fine hurlers from both clubs played their hearts out with great courage and commitment while showing no shortage of skill.
There was little between the teams in the first half and indeed the halftime scoreline of 1-4 a piece reflected this. In hindsight though, probably the defining moment of the game occurred 4 minutes before the break, when a Na Piarsaigh forward, latching onto the end of a long ball, flicked the ball to the net to tie the game at the short whistle. Two Midleton players were injured in this play and while both played on, it was only after the first 8 minutes of the second half when Na Piarsaigh notched two opportunist goals, that the full impact of the pre half time injuries became apparent. Midleton at that stage had no option but to make substitutions as a key defender was obviously carrying an injury. The positional changes that Midleton made at that stage, rallied the team for a while and Midleton narrowed the deficit to 4 pts going into the final 15 minutes. Another Na Piarsaigh goal left Midleton chasing the game and in pressing forward for the necessary scores, Midleton left holes at the back that were exploited by Na Piarsaigh forwards. The outcome was obvious with 5 minutes to go and it was nice to see that both teams emptied their benches to let as many players as possible share in the occasion. The final score was Na Piarsaigh 6-9 : Midleton 2-8. The was a great occasion for Cork Hurling and no doubt these two teams will provide many other occasions of competitive hurling over the coming years. The Midleton players represented themselves, their families, their Mentors and their Club proudly, honestly and skilfully throughout this Championship. It was also great to see so many people return to the Club to support the Team after putting up so many fine courageous displays.  While we have a lot to work on for next year, we have a great platform and we still top this year’s league. The feeling right now is one of obvious disappointment but also one of great pride. Onwards and upwards. Our team was represented by: Ross Shanahan, Mark Daly, Alan Power, Christian Murphy, Ciaran Evans, Sean O Sullivan, Cian Murray, Tommy O Connell, Ross O Regan, Kian Farmer, Tunde Olotu-Jubril, Jake Shanahan, Sam Quirke, Cormac O Brien, Gary Carroll, Evan Rowlands, Griffin Hurley, Fergus Wade, Ronan Lynch, Coleman Quinn, Adam O Connell, Eabhan DeBarra, Cormac Hill, David Scanlon, Niall Higgins, Ryan O Riordan.
