Intermediate Championship.
Another visit to Pairc Ui Rinn that ends in heartbreak with Sunday’s loss to Kilbrittain in round one of the Premier Intermediate championship.History looked like repeating itself with a mirror image of the way we lost to Bride Rovers presenting itself as time was almost up.Last year we conceded a free that was moved more central that lead to the winning goal, this year we won a free that was moved more central but again the gods decreed that we shall not get a break.
The reason we found ourselves in this predicament is however largely of our own doing as we played all but 6 minutes of the game with 14 men and this ultimately was our downfall with Kilbrittain only pulling away in the last 10 mins as the efforts of the lads began to catch up with them.
The half time score of 8 points a piece was a satisfactory one as we had both played against the stiff breeze and with the numerical disadvantage. The backs had settled in well with the two new lads Jordan and Stevie more than holding their own and with James Nyhan revelling in a free role using the ball very well to set up nice scores for Domhnall and Diarmuid O Sullivan in particular. We had a few goal chances that we didn’t convert and in hindsight this was to prove costly as we would probably been better off defending a lead.
The first half of the second half was even enough with the scores level 11 points a piece at the half way stage,we managed to get our noses in front once more but Kilbrittain scored the next 5 unanswered points to lead by 4.We were finding scores hard to come by and after a few poor wides we were given a lifeline when Diarmuid scored a goal from a free which had been won by the hardworking Keith Dennehy.
Given our numerical disadvantage a draw at his stage would have seen us restored to a full compliment for extra time but credit to Kilbrittain not only did they repel everything we could throw at them they worked a lovely point to give them the worst lead of all,2 points heading for the full time whistle.
The last throw of the dice if it had fallen correctly might have eased some of the pain of last years defeat but as they say that’s sport.
Next up in round 2 is a tough assignment against Blarney more than likely on the week-end of June 29/30.
