Russell Rovers  2-9   Aghada  1-10

Our second hurling team opened their account in Division 4 of the East Cork JHL with a hard-earned win over Aghada on a well-prepared Shanagarry pitch last Friday evening, 17th May.
The game began in ideal hurling conditions but deteriorated suddenly ten minutes before the break and the rest of the game was played out in driving rain. Credit to both teams for the standard served up which was almost akin to championship in terms of effort and intensity.
Rovers got the scoreboard into gear with two pointed frees by Alan Cott to which Aghada responded with a hat-trick of points before Aidan Beausang levelled matters with a well-taken score. Then, following a long delivery from Brian Crowley into the Aghada goalmouth, the ball broke to Seamus Kearney who neatly tucked it into the corner of the net. Two more white flags from Aghada were cancelled out by Eoin McGrath and Alan Cott (free) before Brian Crowley fired over a long-range point to give us a 4 points cushion approaching half-time. But in the blink of an eye this lead was wiped out, first with a point and then a goal from a 20 metre free following an unnecessary back-pass into the centre which was fumbled and then fouled. This left the sides tied at the break on 1-6 apiece as they headed for the shelter of the dug-out.
A couple of early second half points by Alan Cott and Jack Beausang, interspersed by an Aghada point, were followed by a long lull without a score from either side until veteran Seamus Kearney grabbed his second goal which restored our 4 points advantage. In the remaining period of normal time the men in green outscored us by 0-3 to 0-1 and then, with Rovers two points ahead, we had to withstand three minutes of stoppage time pressure but full credit to our backs who coped well in dealing with a close-in free and then a 65.
Our half-back line of Joe O’Flynn, Paul Lane and Brian Whelehan was the platform for this victory while Alan Cott at wing forward was a contender for man of the match on Rovers side for his work rate and accuracy from placed balls.
A number of frees against us were baffling to say the least but nevertheless we must compliment referee Dominic Rooney for bringing a full team of umpires with him for a league game.
Nice to see Matthew Fitzgerald back in a black and amber shirt after an enforced absence of three years due to a serious facial injury.
