Russell Rovers  3-14   Midleton  1-7 JHL Div 2

Our junior hurlers collected another brace of points in Division 2 of the JHL in Shanagarry last Saturday evening. The strong wind blowing down-field into the scoreboard corner made scoring difficult for both sides and with Rovers playing against the elements in the opening half; we were content to lead by 1-5 to 1-2 at the break. Ian Smiddy contributed 4 points from play and frees, Kieran Ivers pounced for a goal and Eoin McGrath chipped in with a point. The Midleton attack produced several scoring opportunities during this period but found it difficult to deal with the diagonal wind with many of their wide’s sailing outside the left-hand post.

The Magpies dominated the opening exchanges of the second half and were on level terms at 1-7 apiece after 10 minutes of play but failed to score again for the remainder of the game.  Rovers then began to capitalise on wind advantage and took control of the game with Ian Smiddy giving a man of the match performance, scoring 11 points (0-7f) in total over the hour.  Around the 20th minute Aidan Beausang was in like a flash to bat the sliotar to the net following a re-bound from a save by the Midleton keeper. Kieran Walsh and Kieran Ivers fired over two points and late in the game Daniel O’Brien escaped his marker to rattle the Midleton net for our third goal. Our entire defence put in a solid performance throughout with Eoin Ivers safe as houses between the posts.
While this was Midleton’s third string, it was still a good win for us and keeps our 100% record in Division 2 of the JHL intact.

JHL Div 2 Vs Dungourney

Our junior hurlers made it 3 wins out of 3 in their quest to get back to the Avondhu/Imokilly leagues. This time the opponents were Dungourney and it was played last Sunday morning in lovely hurling conditions in Dungourney. Rovers got the perfect start with less than 5 minutes in a dropping ball was pulled on by Kieran Ivers and flew into the back of the net; rovers added another two points before Dungourney responded with their first score of the game. But rovers never let the lead slip in this game and knocked up a HT lead of 1-6 to 0-2. With all but two points coming from the dead ball accuracy of Kieran Walsh.

In the second half rovers started motoring on and a good run from Daniel O’Brien at the Duns defence which he dispatched in to the goal for another green flag. Rovers were playing better in the second half and this showed with another goal this time from Aidan Beausang who tapped home a rebound into the net, a near repeat of his goal against St. Itas the weekend before. More points were added from Eoin McGrath, Brendan Kearney and Kieran Walsh before Dungourney pounced in a lapse in concentration to score a goal of their own.  But rovers were never going to be beaten and in the end the score line read rovers 3-11 Dungourney 1-6.  It was another good performance from the team as they look forward to their next game in div 2 against Midleton on Sat 16th May in Shanagarry at 7pm.

JHL Div 4 vs Killeagh

Our second hurling side started their season off last Thurs evening down in a gusty Killeagh to take on the home side in a Div. 4 league game. The team could have wished for a better start to the game with a goal line clearance within the opening moments of the game, before Killeagh did put the ball in the back of the net. Playing against the breeze rovers were playing catch up throughout the half but a goal by Jack Beausang gave them a lifeline but they trailed at the interval by 3 points, 1-5 to 1-2.

With the aid of the breeze in the second half rovers thought they could start getting a foot hold in the game but a slow start meant the side trailed by 8 points at one stage in the second half. But to their credit the lads fought back with goals from Kevin Ivers brought the game level in the closing stages, but a concession of silly frees inside the rovers half allowed Killeagh to tap over a one more point before the final whistle to win by the narrowest of margins. Full time score was rovers 2-5 Killeagh 1-9.
