JAFC Quarter-Final

Lisgoold 2-11 (17)
Glenville 0-4 (4)
At Rathcormac
Mon 6th May 2013

Another step closer in our quest for the Junior A Championship as we reached our third semi-final in five years. It what was a really comfortable win as we cruised past a Glenville side down five players from their previous encounter. The first half we saw a roaring start as Glenville hit over the first score via a free. Although this was a false dawn as we took over proceedings playing some very fast attacking football. At times we seem to over complicated things and we were lacking composure at the final third. John Cashman and Denis O’Brien were playing well and the half was capped superbly by a wonderful team move which ended up with the wily John Cronin to raise the green flag. We trooped off at half time 1-5 to 0-2 ahead.

The second half showed no let off, in within 10 minutes of the second half it was game over. Two quick points and then another great team move, allowed the razor-sharp John McCarthy in. ‘Supermac’ got our second goal and we were off to the semi-finals. The last 15 minutes was a formality but the game got a bit hot-tempered and it didn’t seem to be going that way for most of it. Both teams were reduced to fourteen men, which seemed to spoil the occasion but we will move on happy with the fact we have a semi-final to look forward to.

Now we face the annual farcical situation of a waiting game till September for the completion of this championship. One does wonder; is this doing anything great for the promotion of football within the division when our high-profile championship is being treated with such little respect. This though is an issue for when the season is over and when everything is settled. So for now we wait for our semi-final date against a highly rated Erins Own team with anticipation of a great match-up. It will be the hurlers (O’Leary Lions) taking over the show for the summer, we all hope they will match the run the footballers have done this year.

Aghada 3-11 (20)

Our second string made their second outing of the year in the football league and their first at home. It was pretty much the same as the last day as goals win games, we were punished heavily by an experienced Aghada side (Majority of them played in last year’s Junior B Final). They really should have raised a few more green flags given their dominance throughout the hour. We had some good performances from the evergreen Kevin O’Shea, Brendan Flynn and Dave Barry however their performances were not enough, as the whitegate men swept to a comfortable victory. So we are halfways through our programme and hopefully we be able to bag a win in our last three games.

Lisgoold 0-14 (14)
Churchtown 1-15 (18)
At Churchtown
Sun 12th May 2013

Our league campaign suffered a blow as we succumbed to our second defeat this year in a very hot-tempered encounter. Missing five regulars, we were down to 14 men after six minutes, and with us playing against the wind in the first half it was an uphill struggle. John Cashman, Maurice O’Connell and Jer O’Connell were doing their upmost to stem the tide. At 0-12 to 0-4 down it looked like damage limitation for us as we were struggling to match them. However the second half we produced a wonderful, fighting and spirited performance as we battled our way and reduced the hosts lead to three points. Unfortunately Churchtown got the all important goal which settled the issue, time ran out for us as we lost by four. It was a difficult assignment and considering that a good few decisions were going against us added to our frustration. There was though major positives in this match, as we saw the depth of our squad tested and in fairness they did exceptionally well given what had happened. We just hope they can bounce back to victory in their next game.
