Aghada GAA Club News

13 May, 2013

We came out the wrong side of a thriller last Sat night in Ballygarvan when at the death when Clonakilty just got the better of us in the dying minutes of the game. We lead for most of the match thanks to a penalty conversion by Cian Fleming who also added three minors with two coming from placed balls. Points from Tony Wall, Ronan Kennedy and Ml Russell saw us led at the short whistle by 1-6 to 0-4 after playing with a strong wind.
The second half saw us on the back foot conceding 0-6 on the trot. Ronan Power steadied the ship on the 59th minute only for Clon to go ahead from the kick out. Aghada put all resources into attack but were caught with two sucker punches in injury time to give a gloss to the score that Clonakilty hardly deserved.
A rematch with Newmarket now awaits us on the weekend of June 22nd and a chance to put right last years result.

Aghada had to yield to a more composed Midleton team in Rostellan on Thursday night. This was an important final ECL game for both sides as the result would determine the final standings. Midleton played very composed counter attacking football that tested the Aghada defence again and again. Only for the last ditch saves by the impressive Caoimhe Robinson things would have been a lot worse for Aghada. Midleton travelled with a strong panel and a strong will. Aghada responded well to early Midleton scores by pegging back points through Sorcha Phelan and Sophie Bawden. The dynamic Moira McGovern now came in to the game who along with Sorcha Phelan was the pick of the Aghada team on the evening. In a testament to determination Moira Mc Govern found the net with a sweet right foot finish to leave Aghada trailing by 5 at half time. Aghada had most of the possession in the second and half put Midleton under intense pressure for long periods, fresh legs in the shape of Ciara O Hanlon, Laura Varian and Sinead O Driscoll all added impetus to Aghada who scored the last 6 points of the match unanswered. But credit to Midleton they used possession well and found the inevitable gaps as Aghada pressed forward. Aghada now await other results to determine final standings.
