Intermediate Football;
At the 3rd time of asking Cloyne’s journey in the intermediate football championship will be through the front door following their 1 point victory over Grenagh on Sunday last at a very windy Watergrasshill.This win also ensures that we will be playing intermediate football again next year and it also takes the pressure off a congested fixture calendar with the footballers unlikely to be in action again until the end of July.
Having lost the toss we found ourselves in the first half playing with the aid of a very strong wind and it took us awhile to find our feet and indeed we conceded the first 2 scores of the game,2 frees conceded against a strong running Grenagh attack.
Gradually however we came in to the game when we began to win breaking ball around the middle third and 2 Diarmuid O Sullivan frees had us level after 10 mins.Grenagh were next to score with a point from play but we struggled  to turn our possession into scores not helped by some faulty shooting and the difficult swirling wind.
We finished the half strongly however with 2 excellent points from play by brothers Eoin and Colm O Sullivan,a pointed free from distance by Diarmuid and probably the most important score of the game an excellently worked goal from James Nyhan following good approach work from Eoin and Brian Fleming. This goal gave us a 4 point cushion at half time 1.04 to 3 points and we now had something to defend in the second half facing the wind.
The second half brought out the battling qualities and never say die attitude of this team, we took the game to Grenagh with great effect carrying the ball and creating overlaps with great support from the backs with Captain James Cotter and Brian McCarthy particularly prominent. We were first to score in the half with 2 excellently scored frees from Diarmuid into the now near gale force wind that gave us a 6 point lead. The last 15 minutes of the game saw Grenagh chip away at our lead mostly from placed balls but they never threatened to score an all important goal and with time up they had reduced the lead to a dangerous 1 point. It was very fitting however that the last attack from a Grenagh sub should be repelled by the brilliant Brian Mac and when the ball was worked up the field and a score narrowly missed the final whistle sounded on the kick out.
This was a very rewarding victory  achieved by a lot of hard work and determination and no little skill, and also achieved without the services of Paudie O Sullivan one of our most prominent footballers. Our reward for this victory is a round 4 tie near the end of July one we will look forward to with great enthusiasm.
