Aghada GAA Club News

07 May, 2013

This is it the waiting is over as all roads lead to Ballygarvan next Sat evening for the opening game of the senior football championship. The lads are well prepared and timing their run to perfection winning their last two league games. Clonakilty have a lot of youth having won the County U21 title two years ago so we are up against it, but then that’s when we are at our best.
Sat 11th May Senior Football Championship Aghada v Clonakilty, 7p.m. @ Ballygarvan be there

Fri 3rd May S F L Aghada 2-9 Bishopstown 0-12
Another great win as Aghada dig deep with a late rally out scoring the Town by 2-3 to 0-1 in the last ten minutes of the game.
Aghada started well and led against the wind 3 points (all from the boot of Fleming) to 2 after half way through the opening half. The visitors then tacked on three in a row despite the home side putting up tough opposition, to lead at the brake by 0-5 to 0-3 after playing with a very strong wind.
Against the wind Bishopstown controlled the ball better putting the defence under all sorts of pressure and pushed the lead out to four points by the 40th m.  Cian Fleming hit back from a placed ball and from the kick out Eoin Healy had it back to a three point game.
Points were exchanged then Bishopstown were awarded a penalty which Andrew O’Donoghue saved. But the Town drove on adding three minors on the trot to leave them 0-11 to 0-6 with eleven minutes on the clock. Then came the turning point Pearse O’Neill not long on the field drove the ball to the back of the net and it was game on. From the kick out Josh O’ Shea gathered but the Town goalie held it just under the bar then with pressure from Matt O’Connor he brought the ball over his own line and suddenly Aghada were in the lead. Points followed from Cian Fleming, Matt O’Connor and Pearse for a vital win that lifts us of the bottom of the table.
Andrew O’Donoghue, Tim Hartnett, Billy Hennessey,  Kieran O’Connor, Colm Power, Ronnie Power(capt), Brendan Crowley, Shane Wall, Eoin Healy (0-1), Ml Russell, Cian Fleming (0-5 frees 0-3), Tony Wall, Ronan Kennedy, Josh O’Shea, John Connolly; subs Matt O’Connor (0-1) 35th m for Kennedy, Pearse O’Neill (1-2) 36th m for Wall, Aidan O’Connell 37th m for Connolly

Another great boost for the club was when both the Imokilly Senior and U16 hurlers won over the last week. In the seniors win over CIT both William Leahy and Cian Fleming were outstanding and the evergreen Ger Melvin came on to steady the ship near the end. We done also to Ronan Dwane manager of Imokilly.
On last Monday the Imokilly U16 hurlers bridged an 12 year gap winning the Munster  championship under the guidance of manager Anthony Connolly who followed his Uncle Donie Morrissey who also led Imokilly to the title. Ronan Dwane also helped out with John Looney playing.  The B team contained three Aghada players Mark Healy, Daniel Creedon and Aaron Butler.
