East Cork Junior A football Quarter Final Castlemartyr 1-13 Carrignavar 3-08
In the end it was not to be for Castlemartyr as Carrignavar just held on to reach the East Cork semi final. The game looked to be over half way through the second half as Carrignavar led by seven points but we pushed them all the way to get within one point in the end and will be disappointed to come away defeated.
Carrignavar were much quicker out of the blocks and raced into a 1-2 to 0-00 lead. An Eddie Clifford point opened our account and a Jamie Stack free steadied the ship for the reds. Castlemartyr were now playing much better with good use of possession. Barry Lawton opened his account with a nice point and Liam Martin was on the end of a good move to slot over. Brian Smiddy also raised a white flag from the half and Jamie Stack pointed after when put through by Brian Lawton. Our other first half points came from Barry Lawton and Cian Haines. This left us trailing by just a single point at the break after such a slow start.
The second half was a game of two halves in itself as Carrignarvar dominated the first 15 minutes to look like they were going to run out easy winners. They scored 2 goals and a point in this period to lead by seven but Castlemartyr didn’t throw in the towel and dominated the last 15 minutes. A brilliant Barry Lawton goal started the comeback. Three more goal chance also came our way with both Damien MCAulliffe and Maurice Hodnett both lifting goal chances just over the bar while the Carrignavar goalkeeper pulling off a great save from an Alan Collins shot. Three Jamie Stack frees closed the gap to the minimum but unfortunately time ran out and Carrignavar now move on to the semi final. Goals win game and it was Carrignavar who took their goal chances which was the difference on the day. Castlemartyr can be proud of their display and it showed that there is plenty of football talent in the club and with a bit of luck success may not be that far away in the next few years.
