TEAMS:
Glenbower Rovers advanced to the semi-finals of the junior ‘A’ Football Championship having triumphed, yet again, over Fr.O’Neills in The Top Field in Youghal on Thursday last, May 2nd. In front of a large crowd, the reigning champions and holders of the Michael O’Connor Motor Factors sponsored trophy came out on top by a tidy ten points on a score of Glenbower Rovers 1-14 to Fr. O’Neills 1-04. The men in green started brightly and had three early points notched up before O’Neills had settled into the game. Disaster for Rovers after only four minutes when full-back Pods Mc Carthy had to retire through injury and was replaced by Padraig Mc Grath. However, O’Neills began to get into the game and started to trouble the Rovers defence and they were rewarded for their efforts with a well taken goal. Rovers themselves eventually found their rhythm and with Kieran Lane triumphing in the middle of the field, Rovers finally took charge of the contest. Excellent points in the opening half through a number of players, namely, John O’Connor, Philip O’Neill and Brian Collins gave them a half-time lead of three points with the score for Glenbower Rovers 0-8 to Fr. O’Neills 1-02. The second half saw some positional changes for Rovers which paid dividends almost immediately. Rovers, now dominating in all areas, picked off scores at ease through Brendan Barry, Joe Deane and John O’Connor and scored a fabulous goal from Limerick man Shay Lyons who was operating at midfield. The defence also kept up the pressure as they restricted Fr. O’Neills to just two points in the second half. Early substitute Mc Grath and team captain Conor Murphy were impressive as was Brian Collins and Seamus Harnedy alongside. Others to come off the bench and play well were Andy Walsh, Ciaran O’Brien and Allen Keniry which shows the depth of talent that Rovers can call on. Glenbower Rovers finished strongly in all areas and won the game on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-04 to stay on track for a coveted three-in-a-row. They will have to wait a little while yet as Declan Fogartys footballers take a break and give way to Noel O’Connor’s hurlers as they prepare for the tie with Blackrock in the first round of the Championship. Well done to all and we wish Pods McCarthy well in his recovery from injury.

Our junior hurling squad had a great win in Division 2 against Carrigtwohill. The game was played on Friday night last, May 3rd in Carrig and they won on a score of Killeagh 1-17 to Carrigtwohill’s 1-13. Leading by a solitary point at half time, the score being Killeagh 1-10 to Carrig’s 1-09, the lads stood well in the second half to secure the win. There was a big spread of scorers on the night which pleased the management team and they were also impressed by midfield duo, Dylan Coleman and Jerry Kelleher and, also centre-back, Brendan Keniry, who had an excellent game.

Our junior hurling panel started a busy series of Division 1 fixtures for the month of May with a home game on Sunday morning. Killeagh went down to a much stronger Newtownshandrum panel by four points on a scoreline of 1-19 to 1-15. We lost two players to injury during the warm-up which did not help in our pursuit of a victory. Playing very well in the first half against a strengthening wind, Killeagh were on a par with their opponents and matched them on the pitch and scoreboard. Misfortune struck when Newtown scored a fortuitous goal just before half-time and tagged on a number of points for good measure to leave the scores at 1-13 to 0-07. A few positional changes by Killeagh for the second and, helped by the wind, they regained their composure and began to trouble Newtown’s defence. A well taken goal by Paraic Carroll brought Newtown’s lead back into sight and the game was still up for grabs going into the closing stages. Unfortunately, time ran out for Killeagh as Newtown held out for a win in this entertaining encounter by the aforementioned four points. Afterwards, the players were provided with refreshments and well done to Tim Crotty and his team of helpers for organising this.
