JAFC 1st Round

Lisgoold 1-12 (15)
St.Catherines 0-3 (3)
At Castlelyons
Sat 30th March 2013

It’s onwards and upwards for our junior footballers. In blustery conditions, in an arid Castlelyons pitch, we had whirlwind start to our championship campaign as Denis O’Brien raised the green flag after only 20 seconds. A quick move by Moss O’Connell and John Cronin allowed Denis the opportunity. This was a fantastic start for our lads as they soared to a comfortable win and a place in the next round. Points added on by Barry Ahern and John Cashman ensured we were on top for the first half, we could have got to raise more green flags if the St.Catherines goalie wasn’t in such inspired form. Resolute defending from Moss O’Connell, Brendan Flynn, Noel Connery and Jamie Hurley ensured the Saints were kept at bay. Even the loss of Eoin O’Riordan at midfield didn’t affect our lads, as they restricted Catherines to two points in the half, their first didn’t come until injury time in the first half. It was a solid display against the breeze as we trooped off at half-time 1-4 to 0-2.

We expected to deliver more with the now stiff breeze behind our backs and to be fair the lads didn’t disappoint. The second half saw a more efficient performance from Lisgoold. John Cashman was flawless with his free-taking, Barry Ahern also chipped in some lovely scores, Cathal Cashman and John Cronin and Conor Walsh also in an excellent shift as our defence got on top limiting the men from Ballynoe to a single point in the half. We were creating plenty of chances and plenty positives came out of this performance as the game peeped out to its inevitable conclusion.

Manager Seamus McSweeney had this to say, “It was an excellent performance by the lads and a well deserved win. We defended well and put together some nice attacks. We are steadily improving and looking forward to the next round” So a satisfactory performance for our lads and we can just hope this form can be carried on later on in the championship.
