JAFC Castlemartyr 0-09 Dungourney 0-08

Castlemartyr entered the first round of the East Cork Junior A football championship against Dungourney in a bitterly cold Killeagh on Saturday last. The first half was poor as a spectacle, with no points from play from either team. Both teams were guilty of poor wides, with Castlemartyr the worse offenders after having more possesion. The highlight of the fist half from a Castlemartyr point of view was a great penalty save from team captain Michael John Cremin. A goal at that point from Dungourney would have put them 4 points up, and this would have been a big gap given the conditions. At the half time whistle, Dungourney led by 3 points to 2 with both Castlemartyr points coming from Jamie Stack frees.

Castlemartyr started the second half very well had scored three points without reply. Jamie stack pointed a free and Barry Lawton and Barra O’Tuama had points from play. Dungourney responded with 2 points to level the match before Jamie Stack edged Castlemartyr back in front with a point from play. A Dungourney free again levelled the game. Barra O’Tuama, now operating in the full forward line had his second point of the game to put us one up but with the game entering the last 5 minutes. Dungourney looked to have the game won when raised 2 white flags but our lads would not lie down and dug deep for the last few minutes. Brian Lawton made a surging run up the center and was pulled down. Jamie Stack stepped up and split the posts to level the game and was presented with a similar chance minutes later but just pulled his free wide. However, with time almost up Eddie Clifford chased a lost ball to the end line and managed to win possession. He laid the ball back to Jamie Stack who swung over a lovely point with his right foot and now we were one point up in injury time. Dungourney managed one last attack which yielded a free but the was not converted from a tight angle.

This was a great win for this group who move to round 3. Best on the night were Liam Martin who didn’t put a foot wrong at wing back and Barry Lawton Alan Collins who got through an amount of work.
