TEAMS:
Our senior hurlers played Newtownshandrum in Newtown on Saturday evening last. It was their second outing in the league and they were eager to add to their opening good performance. They played against a strong wind and struggled to find the target in the first half and retired at half time with just two points against Newtown’s eight. They played much better in the second half and out scored their opponents by two points and the match finished on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-15. Truly a game of two halves as far as Killeagh were concerned and the mentors were certainly pleased with the second half performance especially with vital scores from placed balls by P.O’Neill and the efforts by the newcomers to the squad.

Our junior hurling teams’ first match in Division 1 of the Avondhu/Imokilly Hurling League was played on St. Patricks Day in Killeagh against Carrig Na Bhfear. Following the postponement of the previous week’s fixture due to weather, both mentors and players were eager to get started in this league. The eagerness of the players was evident from the throw-in as they performed well in the opening twenty minutes. However, their efforts were not rewarded with scores and had a poor return of just four points. Some bad luck followed as Carrig started to get into the game and were rewarded with a fortuitous goal and a point in the closing stages of the first half. The teams finished the half drawing on a score of 0-05 to 1-02. In the second half, our lads again gave a good account of themselves. All the hurling skills were there and they gave a great display of hooking, blocking and passing but were unfortunate in not converting chances to scores. The game finished with a victory to the visitors on a score of 0-07 to 1-06. Despite the loss, the mentors were pleased to have opened their league programme at last, were encouraged by the efforts of the players and were delighted by the turnout of eligible players.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile GAA Notes
Week beginning March 18th 2013

Minor Football
Killeagh/Itas 5-4 Youghal 3-11
On Thursday night last our minor footballers hosted our closest neighbours, Youghal for our third league match this year. In tough conditions it was Youghal who dominated the first half leading by 2-7 to 0-2 at the break. We failed to defend well as a team and we also struggled to get the ball into our full-forward line regularly.
The second half was a completely different affair. We played with a sharper edge up front and also smothered some of Youghal’s promising attacks. Our first goal came within seconds of the re-start as some good teamwork allowed Ian O’Brien to shoot from 30 yards which lobbed the Youghal ‘keeper. A great run from Matthew Murphy allowed Jack Farrelly to score our second goal which was calmly placed to the bottom corner. Brendan Delaney scored the third goal for our boys, a quick free from Ian O’Brien left Brendan to fist the ball over the onrushing ‘keeper before it nestled in the back of the net. After a scramble in the Youghal box, Jack Farrelly hammered the ball into the roof of the net to leave the teams level with 10 minutes to play. Youghal extended their lead to 4 points which was just enough as Darragh O’Brien scored our final goal, but unfortunately time was up and Youghal came out victorious on this occasion.
Team: C Walsh, D O’Brien, B McCarthy, E O’Connor, J Farrelly, D Cahill, C Cusack, M Coleman, M Murphy, D Smiddy, A Morrison, B Delaney, S Smiddy, I O’Brien, E Keniry.

Fé 12 Iomáint   Killeagh-Ita’s hit the big time in Páirc Uí Rinn
Our Under 12 hurlers played two exhibition games at half-time in Saturday evening’s National Hurling League Division 1A game between Cork and Clare in Páirc Uí Rinn. It was a night to remember for our 23 boys, who got almost 15 minutes of action in the half-time sos. Blackrock were our opponents and we hurled competitively with the famed Church Road outfit in both games. It must have been a proud moment for the parents and supporters present to hear our boys’ names being called out over the intercom to the 7,000 supporters present on the night. Well done to our reiteoir óg Padraig Delaney who was most accomplished as the “fear i lár na páirce” in Game A. Many thanks to the Cork County Board Coiste Oiliúna, in particular  to Noel Crowley and our own Sean Crowley for inviting us to play in Páirc Uí Rinn on such a prestigious evening and for providing complimentary tickets for parents for the attractive double-header that we witnessed. What a pity that Cork’s hurlers could not emulate the footballers in garnering a victory over Clare, but in truth the better team won. We go back to the big ball now for the next few weeks with fixtures against Aghada (away at 5.00 p.m. on Sunday March 24th), Midleton (away at 6.00 p.m. in Midleton CBS grounds on Thursday March 28th) and Blarney (at home at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday April 3rd). Bígí ag obair leis an liathróid peile agus ná dean dearmad ar an slíotar agus camán freisin.
