U21 B Football East Cork Semi-final Castlegoold 0-12 Dungourney 1-15 AET
The Castlegoold combination of Castlemartyr and Lisgoold met Dungourney in the semi final of the U21 B football in Ballynoe on perfect evening for football last Saturday night. It took an extra 20 minutes of football as both teams finished level after full time but it was Dungourney who emerged victorious after extra time.
Castlegoold  edged the first half and went in 2 points up on a score of 5 points to 3. Our first half scores coming from James Lawton, Jamie Stack (2) and John Cashman (2). Things got better fir Castlegoold in the early stages on the second half with two points from Jamie Stack and the impressive James Lawton stretching the Castlegoold lead to 4 points. However, Dungourney then found their rhythm and scored 4 unanswered points to bring the sides level. A Jamie Stack free stopped the rot for Castlegoold  but 2 more Dungourney points put them in the lead for the first time since the sixth minute. The game was now on a knife edge, and while Dungourney had most of the procession and were playing the better football Castlegoold didn’t give up and in two raids up the field managed to score 2 points. The first came from a Jamie Stack free after Liam Martin was fouled and the second came from Barry Lawton who had come more into the game from when moved to midfield. With only a minute remaining Dungourney launched one last attack managed to level the game with a point from play.
The first period of extra time was again a very even affair with 2 points from each team. Castlegoold did have a glorious chance of a gold right on the stroke of half time but the Dungourney goalie pulled off a great save and had this gone in then perhaps the result may have been different. Unfortunately the second half of extra time did not go well for Castlegoold as Dungourney were able to up their game and score 1-3 in the ten minute period without reply. Castlegoold can be proud of their efforts and were very unlucky not to win the match in ordinary time. Best from a Castlemartyr point of view on the day were James Lawton, Liam Martin and Adam McAulliffe who played well when introduced off the bench.
