Intermediate Hurling;
After an absence of 16 years we were back on duty in the Intermediate Hurling grade with a league game on St, Patrick’s morning away against neighbour’s Youghal.
It was great to see a fully fit Killian Cronin take his place on the team after an 18 month injury nightmare and also we welcomed back Donal Og between the posts after his own injury hell.
Understandably we were slow to settle into the game as it was our first outing of the year and we found ourselves 4 points down in the first 10 minutes but gradually our touch returned and with the half back line and midfield getting on top we gradually whittled down the lead to go in at half time 3 points to the good 1.06 to 1.03.
The goal a powerfully driven 21 yard free from Luke Cahill and the pick of the points were 2 long range efforts from Killian Cronin and James Nyhan.
The second half saw us face into a stiff breeze but we made light work of it and scored the first score of the second half a Chris Smith point which was quickly followed by another goaled 21 from Luke.Youghal with wind advantage began to come more into the game and although they found scoring from play a difficulty due to our excellent defending their excellent free taker was keeping them in touch.
An excellently worked goal that started with Donal Og fielding the ball from under his crossbar finished to the net by Luke after Dillon Cahill’s powerful shot was parried by the goalkeeper put us into a seemingly unassailable 8 point lead but Youghal to their credit never gave up and with the aforementioned free taker still finding the target coupled with a few long range points they brought the lead down to the minimum with time almost up.
The last score of the game was a James Nyhan free which saw us win by 2 on a 3.09 to 1.13 scoreline.
A good start to the campaign with a welcome victory and it was nice to see the old guard still performing to their usual high standards being complemented by new young faces.
