Although upsides their opponents with points from Brian Mulcahy and Richard O Connell after eight minutes it was Carrigaline who went onto dominate the opening half of this county premier intermediate hurling first round clash at Caherlag on Thursday evening last. Ahead 0-13 to 0-06 to the break their hand was strengthened still further when Creagh Neville’s goal six minutes into the second half stretched that ominous advantage still further to a daunting 1-15 to 0-07.

But a goal from substitute Michael Hegarty triggered off a commendable Saints fight back. Points from Shane Cotter and Shane Kearney narrowed the gap still further. But perhaps the defining moment came on fifty three minutes when opposition keeper Eoin O Sullivan kept out Richard O Connell’s goal bound effort. Carrigaline won out an a final score of 1-16 to 1-13.

It was a much changed outfit for the Saints from previous championships outings. Retirements, emigration, long term injuries and general unavailability means manager Jerry Fitzgerald and fellow selectors are in the process of team building. It takes time and does not happen overnight. They must now prepare their charges for a second round clash against either Inniscarra or Ballincollig who meet at Cloughduv this upcoming weekend. It should follow on fairly quickly after that.

Goals from Eoin Loughlin, a brace from Andy Walsh and a man of the match performance from the ever reliable Joe Deane saw Killeagh emerge 3-15 to 0-16 winners over last year’s defeated finalist Bride Rovers in the first round of the Evening Echo sponsored Senior Hurling championships which followed at 4.00p.m Bride Rovers now meet neighbours Castlelyons in the Qualifiers.

There is an ongoing juvenile programme, while confirmed for Saturday evening May 9th at Innishannon is a round seven premier intermediate hurling league tie with Courcey Rover for 5.00p.m St Catherine’s GAA lotto jackpot now stands at €5800.00.
