Junior Football League Division One

Lisgoold 1-8 (11)
Mitchelstown 0-13 (13)
At Liosgcul

A very good game of football last Sunday, saw us emerge on the wrong side of a two point defeat against the men of north cork. After collecting two points last week against Charleville, it was hoped we could build on from ur momentum. Frustratingly and disappointingly Mitchelstown were proven to be a very efficient outfit and demonstrated why they are league champions.
It a fast and furious first half we were slow to get going but thanks to a solid defensive platform of Cathal Cashman, Moss O’Connell who were assisted with the attack progress of Barry Ahern and John Cronin ensured we went in to a 0-6 to 0-2 lead after 18 minutes. However a slight lapse in concentration ensured the momentum swung back in ‘Town’s’ favour and it was they who led 0-8 to 0-6.

Great scores were being produced by both sides, pick of ours being Denis O’Brien, Barry Ahern and Conor Walsh. Our shrewd management made a decision to switch John McCarthy with Eoin O’Riordan in midfield which proved to work a treat. It was John McCarthy who raised the green flag and we seen to be on course with tens minutes left to take the points on offer (1-8 to 0-10). However Mitchelstown aren’t league champions for nothing and used all the knowledge and know-how to gain three more minors and to squeeze home by two.

Manager Seamus McSweeney had this to say, “We are disappointed with the result but the performance was very encouraging against a very good side, who are the defending champions. We will build upon the positive aspects and will identify areas to improve upon on our next day out”. It was an excellent game and plenty of positives that came out of it. However with three games left, we may depend on favours from other results for us to progress further in this competition, but for championship signs look good for a progressive year.
