Intermediate Football;
The first game of the year was played on Saturday last 26th Jan, a Tom Creedon Cup game away to Mayfield. The conditions were horrendous to say the least and it was one of only 3 games to go ahead over the weekend, great credit to the 22 players that turned out and to Mayfield who made it an entertaining game despite the conditions.
Fielding an experimental side we took a while to settle into the game and found ourselves a point in arrears at the short whistle 4 pts to 3 despite having played with the aid of the elements in the first half.
Our scorers in that first half were an excellent Brian Fleming point from centre back, a Diarmuid O Sullivan free for a foul on himself and the pick of the bunch an excellent score from play by Diarmuid from the left wing using the wind to bring the ball over the bar.
The second half saw an improvement in our play following a few positional and personnel changes where we were able to get on and keep possession against the wind. We conceded the next 3 scores to our opposition to leave us 4 points down but finished the game very strongly scoring the next 3 points from David Jermyn,Diarmuid O Sullivan and James Nyhan and were very unlucky not to goal when Conor O Lomasney’s shot was well saved by the Mayfield keeper. Try as we might we couldn’t quite get the equalizer and Mayfield held on to win by the minimum 7 points to 6, the best of luck to them in the next round.
While defeat was our lot this was an encouraging display and augers well for the league which starts on February 17th with a trip to Glanmire.
