Lisgoold News

10 May, 2009

A hectic week for Lisgoold as the first team upped their preparations for their championship clash against Castlemartyr, the second team came frustratingly close to creating the shock of the championship by earning a draw againist a Russell Rovers 1st string. Also last sunday, in the GAA grounds there was a very sucessful family day out held in marking of the 125th Anniversary of the GAA. This was held between the Junior, Juvenile and Ladies Football clubs and was deemed to be quite a enjoybale day. Lets all hope that this week will be an enjoyable one for our footballers. We urge that everyone to come to Dungourney and Shanagarry on Sunday and Wednesday respectively to support our boys as they as they prepare to contintue their championship runs.

Lisgoold 1-6 (9)

Russell Rovers 1-6 (9)

It was close, oh so close.... History was almost made last Tuesday night as our second almost pulled off a fantastic victory over Russell Rovers. Playing with great spirit and with great freedom Lisgoold took the game to the men from Shanagarry and to their credit played some great attacking football from start to finish. Lisgoold Registered the first score as Gerry O'Connell chipped over the first score, this followed by Ciarán and Dave Sullivan and Lisgoold held a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes, Russell Rovers got back into the game and start to attack back a bit more, the eventually broke through the defence with 7 minutes of the half remaining and raised the green flag. This was a body blow as Lisgoold were more than able to match their opponents, the half-time score read 1-3 to 0-4.

The Second Half in fairness to both teams, matched the first half for excitement and for attacking football. Points were exchanged and even though Rovers seemed to be the fitter team, they just couldn't pull away from Lisgoold thanks to tigerish defending from Patrick Connery, Finbarr Brosnan and Kevin Loughin. The score read 1-5 to 0-6 with 5 minutes to go when an attack started by Paul O'Brien and Moss Mulcahy in the backs ended up in a 45' awarded at the other end. Ciarán took the kick and John Paul O'Brien managed to punch the ball in the net. Mass jubilation was going through the Lisgoold support, as they sensed an upset. However with virtually a minute to go, Rovers won a free inside the 20 and was duly slotted over to rescue the game.

This was a great game in fairness, and to be honest the chance may have slipped through Lisgoold's fingers, as Russell Rovers will surely up their game come the Replay for next week. However our lads can keep the heads up high as they played some lovely football throughout the hour. Selector Donal O'Keeffe said “It was a great performance by us, we may have lost a great chance of going through but we did show tonight we are capable of putting up to anyone. We also used 39 players so far this year in Championship, which shows how far the club has come in recent years, it shows were going places”. Lets all hope that the first team took note from this spirited performance as they lock horns with Castlemartyr on Sunday.

JFL Division 2 May 9th 2009

Lisgoold 1-9 (12)

Killeagh 1-9 (12)

Last Saturday, saw Lisgoold secure a draw againist killeagh in this Divison 2 League encounter. Playing with good confidence, our boys played well throughout the hour and took some great scores. This was a good hard game to get as killeagh were getting ready for the championship game next week as well, so it was a worthwhile encounter.

Charlie McCarthy and Brian O’Leary were comfortable throughout in defence, while Wayne, Kevin O’Shea and Paul (who scored 0-4) showed great gust in attack, and took their chances when given. Midfielder Eoin O'Riordan was industrious as usual (who we wish a speedy recovery from the slight knock he took) and also Micheál O'Sé was stepping up to the plate. Lisgoold can be satisfied in what was a very profitable evening, in which some good attacking football was played. Manager Donal Woods stated “It was good result, we have only a week to go so its a case of fine tuning the lads before we get ready for our showdown next sunday evening.” Lets hope they will be rearing to go come sunday. This also gave us another boost as a win against Glanmire will give us Promtion to Division 1 for next year and a place in the League Final.

Lá na gClub

Sunday May 10th 2009 was designated as ‘Lá na gClub’ as part of the 125th year celebrations of the GAA. So, to mark this occasion, C.L.G. Lios gcúl had a Family Day out in the GAA Grounds which came after Mass at 11.30 that morning and a Parade up to the pitch. A great crowd was in attendance as young and old were out and about on in what was a fantastic day to hold the event.

Our Club President Bob O'Sullivan was honoured for 50 years of service to the club, and we had the honour of having All-Ireland winner of the great Kerry team of the 70's and 80's John Egan to make the presentation to him. After the presentation a series of matches was played from under-6 to the Minors. This was very sucessful event, and to round off the day a Ceilí was held in the Hall late that evening and no doubt, there was great fun to be had until the early hours. Roll forward the next 125 Years!!!
