Erins Own prevail in Replay

Erins Own 1-12 Ballinhassig 0-13

Erins Own advanced to the third round of the Senior Hurling Championshup with a narrow victory over Ballinhassig in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Ballinhassig got off to a great start and raced into a 3 point to nil lead within the first ten minutes. Erins Own missed a few early frees and we did not register the first point from play until the 13th minute from Mark O Connor. It was obvious from an early stage that Mark had the upper hand in this duel and he helped himself to three excellent points over the hour. Even with wing advantage we struggled for scores and were trailing 0-6 to 0-5 at half time.

Erins Own changed their formation for the restart and the changes had an immediate impact in the outcome of this game. Peter Kelly returned to centre back where he enjoyed a great second half and Kieran Murphy moved to the forty where he was caused major problems for the Ballinhassig defence. Seán Kelly pointed for the lead 5 minutes into the half and Erins Own were now playing with more urgency. Ronan O Carroll had a fine point from play and followed this up with a great catch in the middle of the field and passed to Cian O Connor who smashed the ball to the net. This score put us four points to the good but we could not put away a resilient Ballinhassig team who again reduced the arrears to two points but thankfully our defence held solid and Brian McHugh in particular made some vital interceptions. We can now look forward to the third round draw with confidence.
