At Glenville
18th November 2012

History was made in Ballynoe last Sunday afternoon as the second team recorded their first ever championship in the history of the club, it’s only the second time silverware has been claimed by our second string. (First occasion was the Division 3 Football League in 2004). In a tight, tough encounter, our lads emerged victorious from the heavy Ballynoe pitch and ended the season in a blaze of glory by a solitary point. It was a very windswept and blustery day; the conditions were just appalling as our lads did battle with our near neighbours. Glenville won the toss and elected to go with the strong breeze in the first half. They were quick off the blocks and soared into a 3 point lead after fifteen minutes, two of which were superbly taken by Jimmy O’Leary and Aidan Foley. Our defence were finding it tough, as Glenville piled on the pressure, however with Dave Barry playing sweeper, and Seamus Mc Sweeney and Kieran Barry upping their game we were holding well. Patrick Connery, Killian Kingston, Paul O’Brien and Donal O’Leary were holding their own as the game developed nicely. However disaster stuck as a great save from our keeper Eoghan Hegarty, saw the ball spill to TJ Forde who stuck it in. Lisgoold upped their game, and were rewarded when some great passing movement by Patrick Connery, Finbarr Brosnan and Killian Kingston created a chance for Brother Wayne, who from a tight angle raised the green flag despite the effort of Glenville’s Noel O’Riordan. This was a great lift for us as we were now back in the game. We were now only three points adrift, and with the breeze, there was hope for us in the second half. There were a few battles developing as the conditions were taking their toll. John O’Connell got nice a long distance point to extend their lead in this game. This ensured we went in for the half time Jaffa , trailing at 1-4 to 1-0.

The second half mirrored the first as it was a dog-fight in the heavy conditions, substitutions were made at half time and worked a treat. However we had a bad start as Aidan Foley and Jimmy O’Leary extended Glenville’s lead to six with twenty minutes go. This didn’t put us down and we showed fantastic heart as we slowly clawed our way back. Our subs were working a treat as Rob Smart & Bill Whelan, (both at wing-back) started off a move which led to the hard-working John O’Shea who was fouled which led to another pointed from Wayne Kingston, he added two more points from placed balls to leave us three behind. Another sub Emmet Cussen along with Patrick Connery started to dominate midfield and had a great impact as a few more chances were created, we hit the post and with ten minutes to go Wayne raised the white flag once again and the momentum was  now firmly with us. Then five minutes to go came the turning point, A 45 free hit by Killian went into the corner, the Ball was won by Brendan Flynn, who started a move which continued with Patrick Connery and Killian Kingston, which eventually ended up to Dave O’Sullivan who passed a low ball into the square which found Wayne unmarked who smashed it home. The comeback was complete. Now ahead, it was up to the black and amber to come at us.. They snuck a free over with a minute go and extra time loomed. However we had late, late drama, two minutes into injury time, Wayne (Man of the Match) hit a magnificent free from the touchline on the 45, to put us back in front. Euphoria and excitement was now filtering through a passionate Lisgoold support as victory was pending. An extra minute was played and that was that. In the lashing rain, the second string made their own little bit of history and captured the Junior C Championship. It was a hard fought encounter and no inch spared and as both teams gave it all. East Cork Chairman Michael O’Brien presented the Cup to an ecstatic Denis O’Brien, who provided a lovely speech, thanking the panel, our dedicated supporters, Manager Barry Ahern, Selectors Kevin Shea and Noel Connery, our first-aid man Joe Ryan and of course Glenville for such a hard, sporting encounter. It was back to the village where celebrations no doubt, lasted to the small wee hours.

Manager Barry Ahern had this to say “What can I say; I’m just lost for words. They worked so hard and they really deserve this, they really do. They are a great squad and I’m just delighted for everyone as this provides the club with a great morale boost. It just a fantastic feeling to capture this title, It’s a great day for this club and parish, and with Leamlara national school winning on Monday, it just caps the week off brilliantly. I’m just so proud of them”. So are we Barry, so are we.
