Fri 16th Nov J B F C Semi Final Aghada 1-6 Carrigtwohill 0-6

Aghada dig deep to qualify for the Junior B football Final.

In an absorbing match Aghada had just that bit more craft than the home side.

Having said that it was Carrig who settled better and looked very comfortable on the ball but they failed to capitalise on a shaky Aghada start. Two frees from the boot of Eoin O’Neill kept the seasiders in touch as the opening quarter closed.

Aghada started to get on top as the old hands Aidan Kelleher, Vince Morressy, and Eoin O’Neill steadied the ship.

18 minutes into the half Martin Day finished a fine move to the net and suddenly Aghada were ahead. An impressive Raymond Savage stretched the lead with a great point but the game turned again on the 25th minute when Ger O’Brien was given a red card. Carrig converted the resulting close in free. Within a minute Eoin O’Neill landed a long range effort to see Aghada led at the short whistle 1-4 to 0-4.

Aghada used the half time brake wisely rearranging the defence and sacrificed Martin Day to bring on a back Richie Condon

Carrig now with the extra man had a lot of the ball but the revamped backline coped well then on the 35m another old hand Paul Kilbane, stepped up to the plate and landed a mighty score to go four clear.

For the next twenty minutes Aghada defended superbly as the young fellows showed their wares especially Michael Gilroy and Kane Looney.

Carrig tried hard to brake down the seasiders but Aghada defended with style so much so that it was not until the 56m that the home side scored. Now Carrig came forward with renewed vigour and added another minor within two minutes to leave Aghada just two points clear with as many minutes to go.

Sensing danger Aghada upped the pace and the young gun Raymond Savage obliged with a spectacular point to loud cheers from the Aghada following.

Carrig mounted one more attack and drove straight for the Aghada net, as the ball bounced around the square Aghada were happy to see the leather go behind for a kick out and the long whistle followed as Aghada reached their first B grade final since 2002 which we lost to St Catherines this years opponents we last won it in 1989.

Our lads dug deep for this win Kilbane, Kelleher, Vince Morrissey, and O’Neill showed the way. Deckie Morrissey who replaced Nigel Berry after only two minutes also impressed as did the entire backline
