Lisgoold GAA Club News

14 November, 2012

This Sunday will be the day of reckoning for our second team footballers as they will play Glenville in the East Cork Junior ‘C’ Football Final. It will be no doubt a tight game and we all can hope that they will be able to end the season on a blaze of glory. Chairman Eoin O’Riordan stated “It will be a big day for this squad and I urge everyone in the parish to come out in support as they try to land a covet east cork title.” Manager Barry Ahern has reported a clean bill of health, and said training has gone well, also he spoke of all their hard work throughout the year and hopes they will be rewarded come Sunday afternoon. So I urge everyone to come out and support the lads.

LISGOOLD 5k Road Race

The fourth annual Lisgoold GAA 5k road race took place last Sunday morning. In what was a fantastically organised event, in where we saw 160 signed up in absolute wonderful conditions, in what’s becoming a very popular event. Chairman Eoin O’Riordan had this to say “I’m delighted with the turnout. It can only be deemed as a success, by the turnout this morning. We raised a nice amount, which can only be seen as beneficial for ourselves as we continue to raise more funds for the running of our club”.  The running of the Lisgoold GAA 5k road race took place over a new course on Sunday, and attracted an overall field of 160 runners on a most beautiful autumnally cool morning that was perfect for road racing. The race course proved to be very popular amongst the elite runners and the fun runners. The race was, again this year, well supported not only by the wider racing community, but our local community also, and it is humbly acknowledged that events like this would not be possible without the continued support of everyone in our Community.

The winner of the elite category was Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers, who set a new Lisgoold 5k record in a time of 15.09 blitzing the field with his front running style. First lady home was Jennifer Walsh in 21.08 and we had very many category prizes also. Race day 2011 is provisionally penciled in again next year (probably November again!) so plenty time to train to beat that PB!! This year, the juvenile race attracted great interest and a large field, as well as a photo finish, and category winners included, Brian O'Farrell, Sean Whelan, some other category winners were Leanne Woods (Junior Womens), Denis O’Brien (1st Lisgoold GAA member) and John Walshe (Male 60’s) to name a few. Lisgoold GAA Club would also like to thank all our sponsors and Organising Committee , as well as those who helped provide the most welcome extensive range of refreshments available at the finish line. The full list of sponsors and finishers are available on the club facebook page.
