Junior C Football Championship 3rd Round
Lisgoold 2-4 (10)
St.Catherines 1-9 (12)
At Ballynoe
3rd November 2012

The second football team qualified for the east cork final – although it was by the skin of their teeth, in a cold, windswept, Ballynoe venue last Saturday evening. In a tight titanic battle from start to finish, the Saints from Ballynoe won on the night but ultimately and fortunately for us lost out on score difference (as it was the final round in the round robin). It was a case of Déjà vu from the last day as St.Catherines were quick off the blocks and raced into a 3 point lead after ten minutes. Lisgoold upped their game, and were rewarded when some great passing movement by Finbarr Brosnan and Wayne Kingston, who created a chance for Brother Killian, who from a deft flick raised the green flag. This was a great lift for us as we were now level and we went ahead, when Denis O’Brien slotted acrobatically a point over. However a lapse of concentration allowed the saints back in as they got a few points of their own. It was tit for tat, as the hits were flying in, our defence of Donal O’Leary, Paul O’Brien and Peter Leahy (who was Lisgoold’s best player) were getting on top as well as our midfielder Patrick Connery, also thanks to superb keeping by Eoghan Hegarty we could have a few goals leaked in but this didn’t happen, due to his cat-like reflexes yet again. This gave us a platform to create chances, which frustratingly weren’t being taken. However another super score from Brosnan ensured we went in for the half time Jaffa; level at 1-2 to 0-4 ahead.

The second half mirrored the first as it was a dog-fight in the heavy conditions,
scores were scarce but the tackling was plentiful as both defences were on top. Lisgoold were being denied again and again by some great discipline by Catherine’s and some awful shooting and passing on our part. After Catherine’s soared to a two point lead, with three well worked scores, Killian responded with a free, two more points were traded, by either side. As we entered the final 5 minutes as it stood even though we were two points adrift (1-4 to 0-9) we would still go through, but our manager Barry Ahern was urging us to win to copper fasten our final berth.

However, it seemed that the worse was to happen, two minutes into injury time the saints broke away after we had them under constant pressure on their defence they got a penalty, which was dispatched superbly. It was disastrous, as it now stood that St.Catherines were in the final. However this team is awash with experience, quick thinking from our goalie Eoghan Hegarty and Donal O’Leary ensured a fast ball out to Seamus Mc Sweeney who, with Kieran Barry lobbed a long range ball in, it turned to be the last play of the game, hero of the night Emmet Cussen got a touch onto it, which landed a green flag for us, this
ensured our place in the final. Euphoria was the feeling at the final whistle as our lads got over the line and got through. Manager Barry Ahern had this to say “I’m delighted with the fact were through, we didn’t play well enough but we are there. We have to improve but at least we have a chance to win this championship, I’m just thankful we had that bit of luck at the end. We will just have to drive on in training and keep improving but I’m happy with the fact we’re getting ready for a final.” The Final is against Glenville which will be on Saturday 17th of November.
