Junior ’B’ Football Championship Russell Rovers vs. Cloyne

Our junior footballers lined out against parish rivals Cloyne in the second round of the junior ‘B’ football championship last Saturday evening. Without a win in over a year in a championship match in both grades this was a must win game to restore some optimism in the club. Russell Rovers started brightly notching the first couple of scores from play and continued to dominate for large periods of play in the first half. The Rovers lead 7 points to 3 approaching the short whistle with the black and amber defense marshaling their opponents well and breaking up any attacks which came their way. The second half was much the same with Rovers on top but just couldn’t convert their superiority into scores and Cloyne gradually came back into the contest.

The men from the other side of the parish took advantage of some hesitation in the Rovers defence and reduced the gap to just 3 points when a ball was kicked in high and was neatly finished by a Cloyne forward. Responding well to this setback, the Rovers countered with a flowing move which saw Kevin Ivers finish well to the net after a sequence of hand passes through the middle split the Cloyne defence and presented him with the opportunity. This extended the lead to 6 points and the Rovers didn’t look back from there. A penalty was awarded after corner back Ricky Walsh made a marauding run and was brought down by the Cloyne keeper, but the subsequent effort was saved from Eoin Ivers.  Shortly after, another penalty was awarded in similar fashion and up stepped Kevin Tattan to coolly send the keeper the wrong way.  A few more points left the final score line read rovers 2-10 Cloyne 1-3.  It was a very good performance from the team with Eoin McGrath, Anthony Archer, Kevin Tattan and Anthony Walsh having a good showing. A slight dampener on the win was the poor support for a local derby hopefully there will be more support when we line up next Saturday, 10th November, vs. Midleton in the quarter final stage.
