Dungourney GAA Club News

05 November, 2012

Killeagh was the venue for last Friday nights C hurling final where we took on Midleton in a much awaited match.Dungourney had played very well to get to the final and another tough encounter was anticipated against the Magpies.

The game started badly for us and Midleton raced into a four points to no score lead although they did have the benefit of the strong breeze,Dungourney were not playing badly either but could'nt turn possession into scores. We really came into it in the last ten minutes though points from Brian Ronayne and the excellent Alan Kelleher reducing the deficit to a more manageable three points, and we also had a goal disallowed for a square ball infringment half time score Dungourney 0.02 Midleton 0.05.

Dungourney stormed into the game in the second half a massive long range point from a John Cody free seemed to lift the team and with Conor Casey and Pat Rigney hurling well on the wings we started to claw back the scores.Points fromPaul Byrne Seanie Murphy and Eddie Smiddy lifted the crowd but Midleton added two points of their own also just keeping their noses ahead.Conor Hayes replaced Eddie Smiddy and David Harnedy came on for Pat Rigney and it all transpired to set up a frantic last ten minutes where no quarter was asked for or given.

Midleton had'nt had a scors now for fifteen minutes and when Alan Kelleher put over a pointed free on twenty eight minutes I'm sure a lot of the Dungourney faithful thought we had it as we were on top at the time .Midleton however had one last kick in them though and got their eight point on thirty two minutes and in such a close match it proved to be the winner.Referee Mike Walsh blew the final whistle soon after and it was dejection for Paddy and his team ,we won the second half but Midleton by virtue of a solitary point were champions, well done to the team though they gave us great entertainment on their championship run.Final score Dungourney 0.07 Midleton 0.08.
