Junior C Football Championship 1st Round
Lisgoold 2-5 (11)
Glenville 2-4 (10)
At Glenville
21st October 2012

History was made in Glenville last Sunday afternoon as the second team recorded their first ever championship win in the history of the club. In a tight, tough encounter, our lads emerged victorious from the heavy Glenville pitch by a solitary point. Glenville were quick off the blocks and raced into a 3 point lead after ten minutes, two of which were superbly taken by their full forward Aidan Foley. Lisgoold upped their game, and were rewarded when some great passing movement by Finbarr Brosnan and Dave Barry created a chance for Brendan Flynn, who from a tight angle raised the green flag. This was a great lift for us as we were now level and we went ahead when Dave Barry slotted a free over. However a lapse of concentration allowed Glenville back in as they got a goal of their own. It was tit for tat as the hits were flying in, our defence of Donal O’Leary, Paul O’Brien and Kieran Barry (Man of the Match) were getting on top as well as our midfield pairing of Patrick Connery and the very industrious Brendan Flynn. Also thanks to superb keeping by Eoghan Hegarty we could have a few more goals leaked in but this didn’t happen due to his cat-like reflexes. This gave us a platform to create chances, which frustratingly weren’t being taken. However two super scores from Brosnan and one by Denis O’Brien ensured we went in for the half time Jaffa , level at 1-3 apiece.

The second half mirrored the first as it was a dog-fight in the heavy conditions, substitutions were made at half time and worked a treat. Firstly rob smart, (at wing-back) started off a move which led to the hard-working John O’Shea who was fouled which led to another pointed from Dave Barry. Then ten minutes later came the turning point, A Ball won by Seamus Mc Sweeney, started a move which continued with Patrick Connery and Killian Kingston, which eventually ended up to John O’Shea who lobbed in a high ball in the square which was fielded by our second sub Moss Mulcahy, who was brought down illegally and we were awarded a penalty. Dave Barry stood up and slotted it home. A bit of breathing space for us, we were getting on top winning all the small battles (and some big ones) but five minutes later, Glenville raised a white flag and the game was in the balance again. The winning score came with five minutes to go as some excellent work by Killian Kingston allowed John O’Shea to slot one over. With a four point lead, one could safely assume we were home and hosed. However, true to Glenville’s traditions they never gave in and with constant pressure on our defence they got a penalty, which was dispatched. It was game on again, they had a free deep into injury time but it was hit wide and that was that. Euphoria was the feeling at the final whistle as our lads got over the line. Manager Barry Ahern had this to say “I’m Delighted with the win, we played well enough but there is room for improvement, we will just have to drive on in training and keep improving but I’m happy with the result.” The lads next game is against St.Catherines, which will be fixed soon.
