Dungourney GAA Club News

08 October, 2012

1909 to 2012 a long time to wait for a county title ,Jamesey Kelleher and his teammates will be smiling down on this U21 team and enjoying this occasion just like the rest of us as the U21B county cup came to Dungourney on Saturday evening last after another lionhearted display from Kevin Rohan and his team.

Riverstown was bathed in sunlight for the meeting of Dungourney and Nemo Rangers last Saturday evening and a Huge Dungourney crowd cheered on the lads as they endeavored to add the county to the East Cork that they had won a few weeks ago.

The opening half was a tense affair as both sides tried to get a foothold and it was Nemo who got the opening point after ten minutes,Dungourney settled though and had the next three points through Jack,Hago and after eighteen minutes a pointed free from Bill  .Nemo were on top from here to half time scoring a goal and a point to lead by 1.03 to 0.03 at the short whistle.

There was a big debate among the crowd at half time, could the lads overturn this lead in what was a very tight match or would a physically bigger Nemo side continue to frustrate us?We were about to find out.

The selectors made some changes at half time Conor Hayes and Kieran Rohan replacing Brodge and David Harnedy there was a lot of people with fingers crossed but you just knew that this team could do it.Bill pulled back a point straight after half time and Dungourney laid siege on the Nemo goal ,another point from Hago followed before John O Neill goaled to put us back in front and when Warren popped over a long range point you knew they were not going to leave this behind.Nemo recovered somewhat and had the next two points before Bill had a pointed free to ease the pressure ,back came Nemo to leave just one point between the sides and had a free to level it as full time approached but missed.

This spurred on Dungourney and a marvelous point from Hago out by the sideline followed by a long range goal from the same marksman had the crowd cheering before James McCarthy finished the game with another great point. The ref called for the ball and blew his whistle the game was over we had the County who could have believed !Final score Dungourney 2.08 Nemo 1.06.

The Dungourney faithful took to the field to congratulate the team ,Will Daly,Alan Kelleher and Martin Flynn who had all worked so hard to win this trophy.Kevin Rohan the Dungourney captain accepted the cup and gave his speech in his usual cool calculated style.  Unfortunately there was another match following our game and everyone had to move off the pitch but we all headed for Dungourney and the celebrations in great spirits.

The team had a Garda escort into the village and it was great to see the Kiltha Og U15 hurlers there too ,they has won the Eastern division hurling championship earlier in the day.The good spirits continued into the hall where young and old were fed and watered by Mick Hegarty and his helpers!!!The teams were introduced to the crowd to great acclaim and the celebrations continued till Mass time when everyone headed away only for the adults to reappear later in Niall Mcs bar in Midleton and a great night was had by all.

I think none of us who witnessed the first round in Shanagarry thought this day would come but the lionhearted display that they produced that night was the bedrock for the whole campaign and they improved game by game ,,,,well done lads.Just one more thing.........who's for a song?WE'RE ALL PART OF DAILAIGHS ARMY OLE OLE OLE OLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

We made the short trip to near neighbors St Catherine's to take on Killeagh in the jnr B championship last Monday night and came away with the win by a point ,it was a great display by the lads but we will have to be better again when we take on Erin's Own in the next round on either Thursday or Saturday of this week.
