Lisgoold GAA Club News

01 October, 2012

Our congratulations must go to the stalwarts of Kilkenny as they captured Liam for the sixth time in seven years. They are a team, we surely won’t see the likes again and as it hurts to say it, they have surpassed any team that has come from the rebel county. One must admit it may be a good while yet before we see Liam McCarthy back on Leeside. Any who it turned out to be a comprehensive win for the cats against a Gallant Galway team, which mirrored the Minor final as Tipp crushed the young Dubs.

But back in Lisgoold, The chant “Gavin’s winning matches” was sung to the small wee hours as our junior ladies football squad captured the Junior B 13-a-side Championship in a nail biting win over St.Peters (1-8 to 2-1) after leading 1-5 to 1-0 at half time. It was a strong defensive display in the second half against a horrendous breeze that ensured a historic league and championship double, which brought a bit of buzz around the parish. Our Junior C hurlers crashed out at the quarter-final stage against Midleton by two points so it’s up to the Second team footballers and the first team hurlers to bring back silverware to the parish. On that note our congrats to Mike Woods and his backroom staff on guiding the hurlers back to division 1 after a stuttering win over Fr. O’Neills.

Lisgoold’s second string lost out agonizely in a dog-fight in a very wet Pairc Liosgcúl in this East Cork Quarter Final (Which also doubled up as round seven of our league campaign). However, it was a performance they can be proud of as they battled to the very end and had a late scoring spree with Peter O’Keeffe and Bill Whelan leading the way but just came up short. It was a tough battle in the first half as scores were hard to come by. Hits and Hurley’s were being clashed as Midleton were to let know early on, that this wasn’t going to be an easy ride. Scores were a rarity as neither side wanted to give an inch. Our keeper Damian pulled off a great save early on, even though he arose with a different colour jersey as a result of it.
However he couldn’t prevent the game’s first goal as long range free was deflected in and deceived him. Many thought that the floodgates would open, however what followed was a championship performance from a team with great heart. Donal O’Leary, Captain Kieran Barry & Kevin O’Shea began to stand up and be counted, while Cian Scannell and Bill Whelan were the pick of the forwards. Bill got our solidary score as we trooped off for the half-time Jaffa 1-2 to 0-1 behind.
Some inspirational words were given by manager Mike Mulcahy (as per usual) and it seemed to work a treat as Finbarr Brosnan, Seamus McSweeney & Emmet Cussen upped it a few gears as our lads battled away. Constant pressure from our backs led to Midleton wides and some excellent hard work from subs Paul O’Brien and Patrick Connery into harassing the Midleton backs, which rewarded us frees (which were expertly taken by Bill) and winning back procession. Midleton squeezed in a second goal with 11 minutes to go and at 2-5 to 0-4 that seemed that. However some tactical switches by the backroom team of Mike, Adrian & Jim gave a new lease of life for the players. Bill Whelan slotted over his fifth free of the game, this was followed by a wonderful Seamus McSweeney point, and with 4 minutes to go Peter O’Keeffe hit a cracker into the Midleton net and it was game on again. Alas, it was meant to be as that break didn’t come and the second string hurlers were out.
Manager Mike Mulcahy had this “Without a shadow a doubt our best performance of the year, they played with great heart and with a little bit more training some of these players could mix it with the Junior A’s. I’m proud of them, they were very spirited and fought to the end, and I can ask no more out than that.” So, the hurling side has come to the end for Lisgoold let’s hope the second string football can end the season on a blaze of glory.

JHL Division 2
Lisgoold 3-10 (19)
Fr O’Neills 3-6 (15)

A sub-standard performance by our first team hurlers saw them limp over the line last Monday week in this final league game encounter against the men from Ballymacoda. While the score-line may suggest that this was a cracker, it may be seen that way but Lisgoold should have been out of sight far from the final whistle. It was the usual Suspects in this case as Conor Walsh, Jer O’Connell, Patrick O’Maohny in defence, while John Cronin, Moss O’Connell & John Cashman were pulling the strings in the forward division. It was to be honest a routine enough performance for most of the first half and while we waited patiently in the second half for that scoring spree bust to see off our oppoents, it strangely never came. Fair play to Fr O’Neills who gave us a good battle right to the end, it’s now between themselves and Killeagh for the right to play us in the Division 2 league final. With a county league series now after emerging in recent years, (which is the reward for winning this competition) it might turn out to be a good end to what has been a disappointing season for the first team.
