Dungourney GAA Club News

This weeks jackpo was 450euro but there was no draw ,there will be two draws next week.

A great night was had by all who attended last Friday nights"Night at the dogs"greyhound racing night at Youghals greyhound track.A large Dungourney crowd travelled to the seaside town to enjoy a great nights racing there were nine races on the night but the one we were all waiting for the "Dungourney buster".Con O Mahonys dog Elsinore Shaw won the race but what most people were watching for was the combination of the dogs numbers to see who won the thousand euro prize, that particular ticket was not sold so a draw had to be made for the prizes. After the draw (carried out by event organiser Steve Motherway) Mary Harnedy of Clonmult was the winner of the first prize, there were then five draws for one hundred euro each and these were won by Julie O mahony from Lisgoold,Martin Mackey from Killeagh,Aishling Cody ,Sean Broderick and Pat Doocey all from Dungourney congratulations to all. Thanks again to everyone who supported the Dog night and made it the success that it was.

Much credit must go to Steve Motherway for all the work and orginisation that he put into the venture and to all the ticket sellers who were on the roads this week its a hard job but its greatly appreciated.

East Cork U21 Semi Final Dungourney1-13 Fr O Neills1-09,

Another week another venue but the same goal an U21 title ,those mighty U21s continued to keep us dreaming of a first title since 1987 and this was another big step on the road to achieving our objective.

Dungourney opened the stronger and had the first two points on the board from Bill and Niall before Fr O Neills responded with a point.Back came Dungourney though and Bill had the first of his five further points of the half on six minutes, the excellent Niall Motherway was booked but did not let it affect his performance. O Neills tacked on three more points before half time.Dungourney hunted and harrassed their opponents throughout the half leaving O Neills with no time on the ball as the lads were well on the top of their game half time score .Dungourney 0-07 O Neills 0-04.

The second half continued with a great point from Bill before Shane hegarty scored a good goal and we were on our way Bill had another two pointed frees before Martin Hennessy brought off a stunning save to keep the momentum with us ,O Neills had put four more points on the board by then and a goal would have really tested our resolve.Points from Bill ,Niall and Hago kept us ticking over and even though O Neills scored a goal and a point in the last five minutes it was too little too late and Dungourney ran out winners on a scoreline of Dungourney 1-13 Fr O Neills 1-09.

There was much excitment after the game as we looked forward to our first U21 final in quite a few years but it did not phase the team as coached by Will,Alan and Martin they knew that nothing was won yet ,still though a night to savour for all and we were looking forward to Lisgoold on Saturday evening.

EastCork U21 B hurling final Dungourney v Watergrasshill,

So the time had come and another epic chapter was to be written in this teams unbelievable year we travelled to the next parish Lisgoold to battle for the elusive U21 trophy

and I think we all knew that this bunch were not about to come home without it.

What a start a goal after just three minutes from the returning John O Neill and three unanswered points from Bill put us in the driving seat before the Hill fought back as we knew they would with five points and only one in reply from Jack who was booked soon after. The Hill leveled the match just on thirty minutes but Bill put daylight between us in stoppage time leaving the scoreline Dungourney 1-05 Watergrasshill 0-07.

There were a few anxious moments for the travelling support at half time ,could this team step up to the mark again?

But of course our doubhts were unfounded the lads gave a hurling display in the second half two frees pointed by Bill were followed by a Hago goal they were on a roll now and as Hago with two points James Mc,Niall, and two from Jack put us well ahead after fifteen minutes with only one point in reply from the Hill.Martin made agreat save after twenty minutes before the Hill struck two goals in as many minutes to get the butterflys going again ,but they had only one more point and Bill pointed three more frees sandwiching a great goal from THE BRODGE.

There were thirty two minutes on the clock when ref Denis O Flynn blew the final whistle, cue for great celebrations for the team and the Dungourney faithful who poured onto the pitch for the hand over of the cup.Team captain Kevin Rohan accepted the cup from the East Cork Boards Jerome O Brien and gave a mighty speech in praise of the team and managment and Will Daly who is such a charasmatic figure for them.

It was getting dark before we finally left the pitch and headed back to Dungourney hall where the team and selectors were feted by a great crowd ,it was great for the young and old alike a mighty fillip going into the short evenings...........and we have a county campaign to come!

Final score Dungourney 3-16 Watergrasshill 2-09.
